Test rode the bike in between the hail showers - strangely, I didn't add any front preload as the springs never bottomed out, but I still need to set up the front sag properly. Before all that, soldered a new cable into the loom at the LH front indicator connection - loose wire stopped the indicator flashing.

Today I got round to fitting the new bush I bought yonks ago - into the right hand footrest hanger in which the brake spindle lives. I have to say the excessive play hasnt been totally eliminated. I did read somewhere that a D9 had a MOT failure on excessive brake pedal play. I have to say when I had my bike motd this year I saw the mech waggle the brake pedal but didnt say owt. Also checked front pads and cleaned calipers/pistons today.

I replaced the same footpeg hanger and the rear brake pivot/shaft and, like yourself, still had some play when wiggling the brake pedal side to side. While the pivot was apart, put in a new brake clevis pin, which has firmed up the rear brake.

For what it's worth, my black D9 (56,000 miles) & blue D9 (7000 miles) each have about the same amount of play. Neither are play-free, but I think both are fine.

Fitted new front wheel bearings and replaced one brake pad while the wheel was off...Strange that one of the front wheel bearings had rapidly gone from no play to loads of play that I could easily feel through the steering creating quite a bit of a high speed weave! Anyway its happy now again which is good, the bearings weren't that difficult to get out the second one far easier than the first after the spacer tube was removed.

Seems to me the biggest winger whiner on here ,about a tiny we drop of wet or cold, is the same one playing that same old scratched 78 over and over regarding The Softie Southern Shoe Shuffle, and yes quite frankly I cannot believe he is 8 years younger than me maybe in years but worlds apart otherwise. As A 6 year old I was supposedly reputed to know every car on the road ,so knew exactly what an Austin 7 clone of the Morris Mini Minor, the former rocked up outside our house just after Christmas 1959 for Mum to learn to drive in, was. However she recalled that new 67 Viva more fondly.
Knew most motorbikes too so I am surprised even as a six year old Bev wasn't conversant with the impact the Viva HB had on the smallish car market, and the square box Cortina didnt( after the characterfull Mark 1) it just looked plain.
Vauxhall tried to race the Viva up with the OTT first GT and admittedly the Tina did benefit from the Cortina Lotus lowered suspension ( with at first chrome Rostyles) and a GT Interior with somewhat suspect plastic 'coated'wood in the Executive version. But I think the whole concoction looks odd these days. The dumpy Escort it took Ford another 2 years after the much prettier Viva to introduce and replace the Anglebox, did actually benefit from racing apendages, and sorry but folk are asking ludicrous amounts for them right now, however the Mexico according to Autocar is the only Ford on the up right now price wise. by the time the Coke Bottle Cortina arrived it was a passé fashion, and the HC Viva had become but a square 3 box car of little distinction. Better not say too much about Fords as there is one parked outside here right now, and my recently aquired Reliant Scimitar SS has a CVH XR3 engine, only obviously running to the rear wheels.
My Viva was parked between two GTs ( a Mark one and two) at a show a while back, and a member of the public bowled over at the entrance and came rushing, gushing over to say his first car was a Viva, and he hadn't expected to see one there, he was saying to my GT friends later, nar that's how a Viva should be, pointing to my basic deluxe, so doubtfully spoilt Jockulars might 'yawn'continuously assert they were cars we( presumably the Royal we) couldn't wait to get rid of, seems th majority wish they still had one as I wouldn't know what to buy now if I had the inclination to get a newer motor.
Well SatNav did suggest anything to kick start a flagging forum.
Enter the Thong stage left

I bought one for very little money. I've actually spent more on my C to C bike. It's been a little neglected of late so nowhere near the same league as the two shiny D9's of M40 or Trev, however this one has been used. Will post some photos up soon. Needs a bit of TLC for an MOT. Fork Seals, brakes done etc. I might have to revise my Gay Maroon comment.

I bought one for very little money. Excellent - my black one is also a needy case. Plenty to do on that. Needs new swingarm bearings, front disks, front wheel refurb, front & rear brake caliper refurb, a decent clean, plenty to do really. Will be fitting the new swingarm bearings in the morning, all being well. What stopped me the other week was that stuck RHS swingarm bolt!

I'll give it a comprehensive going over tomorrow but given the state of the swingarm it'll be coming out anyway. Hopefully it won't be too difficult. As if I didn't have enough projects on my hands already. I wonder where to get a gallon of that nifty Battleship grey paint I've seen somewhere before.

Nosing into that bike's history, I'm sure you're right about the recent neglect (last MOT expired last September) but it's not been used much at all has it? Half the mileage of Trev's maroon missile, so it should be twice as good by the time you're done .

He's not the practical type at all. Yep been rotting in the lockup since September. I'd bet I did the last oil change and brake service with him about 3 years ago. Of course you have to take into account the fact that Trev's remains locked and tucked up in the heated, carpeted, garage at the merest whiff of moisture in the air. Mine has lived and worked in Scotland. It's been a hard 40.000 miles.

hey all meant to post for ages but i've been quite lax about it. i got everything done, discs on, pads changed, full service done, brake pistons unseized and... wait for it... MOT PASSED! got it all done and dusted even went to my first meet on sunday and everything i'm so pleased with it and i couldnt love the bike more, in fact, i lovce it so much i'm looking at buying a pre-diversion model as a project bike! i've found myself falling in love with yamaha, theres just something about the way they build bikes that suzuki or honda didnt have yesterday i got my ancient saddle bags slung onto my bike, today i'm going to see about fashioning some sort of bar weights because it could use a bit more stability at full lean (which is surprisingly easy to achieve considering how heavy and how not a sports bike it is haha) plus the bars do vibrate quite a bit at motorway speeds. i'm trying to not do motorways though, much more fun and with the bikes low gearing i think it'll be happier on a roads, if its worth going anywhere its worth taking your time after all

Too true and well done. Thing is with pre Divvies that they go up to 1200s and I actually ( whispers it)like the big XJs better. I also prefer my earlier XJ also, truth be known, but as I do not run a PT cruiser so one's judgement isn't in question, maybe unlike Dunkin doughnut a ban may be on the cards.) I recently went to March in Cambridge having bought unseen a stolen recovered Sachs with a Virago VTwin as some of the parts Tank and Seat are interchangeable with my 650 Roadster. They had a 1200 XJ for around £350 but I decided as I got rid of the 900 last year really on the grounds of its weight and my ongoing health issues and being since dragged along the road my leg trapped under a fairly weighty Aprilia 1000 was bad enough, however that is written off now, and I still have my leg thankfully, not to go for it and just trailered the Sachs home. Concentrating now on downsizing. Although it had said Downham Market on Fleebay it was actually coincidentally the same Village I stayed at overnight ,after collecting my Aprilia 500 Maxi Scoot from just outside Peterborough a few weeks before, and en route up had peeled off the A14 and finished up going through Newmarket itself with loads of equines on the Gallop and at one point endlessly crossing a road in the town itself( not sure what the favourite was) Anyway I haven't been able to do much lately on bikes or cars but did have a bimble alongside the Essex coast on the Atlantic Scooter last week , and as with the last five or six miles coming home from a car show Sunday on the scoot especially manouvering over freshly chipped roads, my kneecap was getting somewhat painfull. At that same show last year was a nice looking in Yam Yellow andBlack XJR 1300, but elsewhere question of a PT cruiser was made as seen in one of my pics from the same venue at a Classic Show, on a 13 Plate hardly like some of the recently registered Harley's that get let in. OK maybe Divvies from the naughtiest are entering the new timer stage and whilst great reliable and marvellously comfy workhorse , I am for once in accord with Bev, they are not that good to be considered Classics either, and sorry however nice that 1300 was neither should that have been displayed as such.

oh i'd never thought of the big 1200's or anything, thats maybe an idea also for £350 quid it would be, to me, a question of "why wouldn't i?" haha. the one i'm looking at is 900cc and £450 but i tihnk if i take it as it is i could probably get him down to £300, since it doesn't even have a key or v5 thats harsh about health issues preventing you from riding so much but i think its seriously badass that you're still at it do the xj modesl have 1200/1300's or are there more letters in their name? i want to have a look about and want ot fidn the rigth thing

And all pricey bit tempted by one XJ 1200 who wants to PE for a Triumph Bike or 500 scooter, however I just ordered a new screen for my 500 Atlantic scoot as the one on it you have to look over as its carp, and not going to be up to riding big heavier stuff so no real point, especially as it's down in Chichester. Looks real nice though. As far as I can tell there were 1100/1200 FJs 1100/1200 XSs1300XJR and XJ 900 pre and Diversions but maybe as with the XJ andDivvy 600s as Martin Mr M40 pointed out on the relavent 600 sections, little is interchangeable. Also you can pickup Suzy 1200 Bandits for less or equal prices and having never owned one when fully recovered I would seriously consider one . Even the later 1200/1250. So much for downsizing.

Actually since you have a penchant for Italian crap why don't you get yourself a Guzzi, generally they're lovely to look at. I loved looking at mine, I just hated riding it.

Don't buy the carb version bandit, if you like to leave it unused for a few weeks, injection bikes fair much better.
