With fairing and subframe off as a result of this; diversionclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=14285, I decided to remove the AIS gubbins from my D9. The AIS is an emissions system for California laws and summising a trip there on the divvy was not on the cards, I thought why not? Surprised me how much carp is involved in this 'clean' air contraption, numerous rubber pipes/clips, reed valves and metal pipes where it clamps onto the exhaust side of the head (where the spark plugs are). Removed all this; Blanked outlet at the bottom of the airbox, same with smaller rubber pipe on carb/exhaust side, and capped plugs where they emerge from the exhaust side of the head with these little beauties; Made and supplied by Reaper of this site, thanks Paul . All in all, not too long a job and a darn sight cleaner looking inside the fairing and near the plugs. Off to test tomorrow, no doubt with all that weight saving she'll be 10 mph faster now too

Hmm, I might try that - save me having to refit it when I put the bike back together.
Look forward to hearing how it goes.

It will be interesting to see if you notice any difference in the noise. I think? I've read on this site that the emission gubbins can be the source of an irritating noise?

After being tried and tested on the Yorkshire run recce t'other day I can say the removal of the AIS has not had any detrimental effect on the how the bike runs/performs. Can't comment on wether an irritating noise was not heard, had Martin with me all day

I am sure Fiasco can successfully wire up heated grips, it's just that we haven't seen any evidence of it yet. I am sure that you can tighten caliper bolts up, it's the other bolts which you can't undo that I worry about

Clive, I'm a bit worried you've been groomed for a post as 3rd wheel in the 3 Amigos. It doesn't have to be this way. He doesn't have you under duress does he ? or is he just holding the photos ?

Trying to contact REAPER (Paul Garner). Could you make me a set of the blanking plugs for the 900 ais system as I would like to remove it.A price plus postage would be great.

Paul's blanking caps are properly engineered You could also drill some 10mm stainless dome nuts out to 12mm (if I remember) and stick them on with silicone sealant. There is no back pressure to speak of.

They actually suck, ooer Mrs, so a hard setting compound is preferable.

Silicone RTV or bathroom with dome nuts would be fine 10mm have a 13 spanner so drill carefully. 12mm should also work but Paul's are neater looking.

I've just removed all my AIS gubbins. I found that 15mm copper pipe fits neatly over the pipes coming off the head. I was in a bit of a rush, but I use a couple of stop ends on the 15mm pipe and the small rubber connecting tubes that are circles in the pic below. These slide right down to the bottom of the pipes and will accept the 15mm copper pipe happily. If you cut the pipe to the length of the narrow part of the pipe (I guessed I was rushing) and solder the cap on the end, use the rubber pipe to clamp it all up (using the existing clips) it works a treat and costs peanuts. I sprayed mine black (very quickly) and it look OK ish. I'm going to tidy them up when I get a chance, using end feed rather than pre-soldered joints and measure it all up. I think I can get away with using instant gasket, rather than the rubber pipe to hold it in place. Personally I wouldn't use silicon sealant.

Another option would be to longer rubber hoses with the plugs hidden under the tank.
I believe Reaper solves the problem with O-ring seal but silicone gasket and silicone sealant are much the same product.

Did I miss the answer to the question about is it worth it? i.e. is it more fuel efficiant, does it run better, is it smoother, is the power up? etc

Is it quieter?

It removes the rattle of the AIS valves but makes zero difference to performance. All it does is allow air to get sucked down the exhaust ports after the valves. The various valves stop gasses blowing out.

Well after a run to Devon and back over the weekend, I didn't notice any difference in performance, but it does pop and bang more noticeably on overrun - especially coming down the 1:4 hills on Exmoor, but nothing worth worrying about.
And to add - the really annoying vibration from the AIS stuff has gone, so it's much quieter!
