Hi I have recently purchased a Fazer 600 rear monoshock which I intend to fit onto my 1996 XJ900s this winter. I hear that later D9’s have holes in the rear mudguard/undertray so that the top shock bolt can be accessed without removing the mudguard. Has anyone got pictures or measurements for these holes so that I can cut the rear mudguard. Looks like Bev may be able to help diversionclub.proboards.com/thread/16540/replacing-rear-shockThanks Ken

OK
One thing that benefits the D9 is the regular removal of the top shock bolt so that a thin film of grease can be applied to stop corrosion. This is why people drill the holes in the 'under seat tray': to make the job a little easier, even though removal of the tray only takes about half an hour or so.
So, given that yours doesn't have any holes, I would surmise that the top shock bolt hasn't been removed for at least a decade or so, and will be rusted solid. Thus I think you will end up removing the tray in any case to cut the bolt out.
The following is a link to the rear end strip down of my bike a couple of years ago.

Hi Satnav Thanks for your reply and the link to your thread from last year. I went through much the same as you in 2011 when I got the bike. I fitted a new Betor monoshock along with new bolts in the shock and new bearings in the swinging arm etc. I unfortunately found a different shade of grey for the swinging arm The problem is that I have never been happy with the Betor monoshock and I have now purchased a Fazor 600 monoshock which I hear is a direct replacement. All the bolts should now hopefully come out easily and I wanted to just swap the monoshock without stripping everything down again. Regards Ken
