This weeks update!
The pivot bolt has now been removed. Bev welded a socket to it and we used a scaffy pole over the ratchet to provide extra leverage and turned it out. The centre stand has also been welded up and painted. Photos to follow because im too tired just now. ;D

This weeks update! The pivot bolt has now been removed. ;D Well done! You beat my record. 3 days and about 6 broken (good quality) Allen keys. ;D

Nah probably only a full day of attacking it Gordy so you still hold the title.

But we have broken several Allen keys and Allen sockets, good and poor quality.
Little Welder had to be turned up full belt to get enough heat into the pivot.

Nah probably only a full day of attacking it Gordy so you still hold the title. I have to qualify the 3 day matter by advising this included the pivot removal then trying various bike shops and tool hire places to get a bearing puller to get the inside-outer part out of the swing arm. One bike shop had no bearing pullers , the next one broke theirs, tool hire places had no pullers. This was very frustrating having worked in a boatyard where we had every puller set known to man, much needed for outboard motor work. I ended up making pulling gear So, the pivot took a day, the swing arm about the same, and a day faffing about Stirlingshire wondering where all the engineers had gone BTW the boatyard episode was in 1971-72 so I suppose times change Having just paid £18 for a 2nd hand starter solenoid which I would have expected to pay £2 for in the good old days I hanker for the good old days. Including the starter motor, (new Chinese), getting the wee TTR back in harness has cost about £110, but reading that just a new starter could have been £3-400 I should feel chuffed. Now, doooring the woaaaah

We still have to get the outer bearing from inside the swingarm. We left these task until last and continued the strip down. I have a set of pullers but haven't applied them to the offending item as yet. I might even consider taking them to an Engineering shop to have them removed if the Pivot pin saga was an indication of how difficult it is.
We ended up cutting the pivot to remove the bearing inner, which was seized solid on the pin, before welding on the socket. Yamaha didn't make this easy. A grease nipple around the area of this bearing might have been a good idea.
As for the cost of parts, absolutely scandalous.
Does anyone know the size of the swingarm bearing on the D9 or do I have to measure them myself ?
Personally I hanker after the days I could pop over to the machine shop and borrow what I needed. We don't have a factory now never mind a machine shop.

Try welding a tee shaped rod onto the bearing. After my saga I was relating the sad tale to my NW200 veteran mate. He was a precision engineer, (toolroom fitter at Philips). He said they always tried this on their racing bikes and had 99.9% success. The heat from the tack welding releases the seizure and the rod or whatever you can weld in pulls it out. If you've got a trailer builder/hire place take your bearing bits there, they are standard sizes Or these www.wemoto.com/bikes/Yamaha/XJ_900_S_Diversion/95/picture/Swinging_Arm_Pivot_Bearing_Kit/

I'd seen the Wemoto parts but figured I could probably get something cheaper at the local bearing supplier. I'll measure the pin and swingarm and see what I can get to fit.

Here is our method of removal ;D Soo, it's true what they say about pigeon sh1t then - highly corrosive ! Just jessing mate, you're getting there. Btw, next time the swingarm comes off my D9, probably this winter, I'll be looking at a grease nipple or two on it

It's alright apart from the overspray (the bits of silver) which should wipe off with a bit of turps. You want to be more careful when sparaying, taking care to avoid any overspray.
;D ;D ;D
Very nice job. Keep the pics coming.

Not what everyone here would have chosen, but it still warms my cockles to see a knackered bike brought back from the brink, anyway.

It actually doesn't look as blingy in real life. Does look very nice in the flesh.

I do like that frame finish, great price too. I can see this bike being the star of a YDC run, JR12? ?

What on earth is the rest of the bike gonna look like if the frame looks as bling as that?
Are we going to need welders goggles to cast an eye in its' direction? ;D

Update! following some time fixing my car after bursting my brake pipes it feels like forever since i did anything to the bike.
Today I started cleaning the engine up and painting the rocker cover and during the week I will weld a nut onto the snapped exhaust stud for engine fitting next weekend. My centre stand is on and the forks and front wheel, the frame has been bubble wrapped to avoid damage.
