It's been a while since I acquired a new toy (last September, in fact !), & a few know that I've recently taken to buying back bikes I've previously sold . This is my lastest acquisition, which I orginally sold 8 months ago. It's the bike I used on one of the Jock Runs (can't recall which one - Moffat ). She's looking a bit sorry right now . Here she is after an initial (long!) scrub: Some areas need more than elbow grease: I've already cleaned & repainted the Wingrack, changed the oil & filter & have more service parts on order. Brakes are in need of a thorough service. New chain & sprockets are on their way & I may encourage Clive to fit new tyres for me . After a brief flirtation, she'll go back on Ebay & like last year 25% of the final price will be donated to the current YDC charity .

Blimey! Not surprised you bought it back Martin. An act of mercy that was.
Can you save that end-can?

It's been a dark day today, fettling-wise, & with every skinned knuckle I developed an ever-increasing sense of foreboding ......... Then I broke my chain rivetter .

Breaking for spares thoughts entered your head then? Or are things too rusted solid to be able to even resort to that?

Breaking for spares thoughts entered your head then? . It won't come to that. It will however require a little deeper foraging in my wallet . I need a fit retired bloke to come over & carry on the fettling as I'm back in work tomorrow. Could probably get some white bread & lard in if that seals the deal !

Good job with the end can! Cheers Bevy - it came up quite well . Borrowed a 46mm 3/4inch socket today - Couldn't get sufficient purchase on the nut I need to remove, because it's so shallow: I applied sufficient force (my entire manly frame) to the task but no joy - it just slips off under force . Started to round off . I've considered trying to knock it around with a big screwdriver, but that will obviously muller it . .... considering that trek up to Verde's but has anyone got any suggestions I could try first, as that travelling time will eat into the weekend fettling time?

Did you say the socket was borrowed no problem then... just angle grind the open end of the socket so that your past the chamfered bit ;D BTW is there not supposed to be more than 1 bolt/nut in that sprocket or did the others fall off ;D

I've ordered a 6-faced impact one which I'll do that to when it arrives ..BTW is there not supposed to be more than 1 bolt/nut in that sprocket or did the others fall off ;D Actually there's TWO bolts . (Had to replace the rear wheel, & fit the new chain to lock the hub so I could jump up & down on the bar holding the socket. Did me no good .)

Silly sod thought alert........... ...you sure it's a left hand thread ? Yes. ...... and what's the reason you want it off? So I can unseize the chain adjuster/brake bearings, else I can't fit or adjust the new chain: ..... don't be so hard on yourself, you're not a silly sod .

Feck me, what a pullava Hopefully your six sided impact socket will do the job, plenty of leverage and a good clout with anything large to hand should do it. Good luck.

Socket arrived yesterday - much better fit, this one. No amount of hammering will free the damned nut though. Will try to source longer bar for the drive .

Ain't you got a bit of scaffold pole lying about*, slip that over the bar...you can't beat leverage *if not, ask Pikey, they always have access to some?

..... Ain't you got a bit of scaffold pole lying about*, slip that over the bar...you can't beat leverage As good as - A slightly-bent D9 fork leg / stanchion, part of the leftovers from JTB's D9 forks mallarky. Plenty of leverage, bike is parked front tyre to house wall, front brake tied on, rear wheel just skips under the leverage. So need to get the rear caliper fitted back on, get the rear brake lever compressed & try again. For another evening ....

Disclaimer - Not intended to be in any way shape or form a comment on Chris's size, merely an observation that more weight on the bike could help a limp wristed southern jessie perform better.

Last attempt this evening, rear wheel suitably stabilised : .......... but even with me holding the socket on squarely & 2nd eldest putting his weight behind the leverage, no joy . Alternatively, MrsM40Man "When you asked me if I wanted to go out on the bike tonight I thought you meant a little further ".

THAT'S not leverage!!! Summats about four foot long is what you need. Come on, there has to be a limit (or the house wall will be in the way ) - it's a full 32inch long as it is. (The fork leg is complete, not just the slider).

Ever thought about investing in an impact gun? had similar prob with nut holding clutch basket on sons bike, him stood on rear brake pedal me jumping on length of bar = wheel spin...2 mins of compressed air rattler did the job with ease.

Ever thought about investing in an impact gun? Suspect I'll be taking up the offer by Verde to borrow his rechargable one. * Have you seen the price of those things? To use an air one also of course requires a compressor. Around £500 for some 'average' kit to undo a nut is a little beyond this poor Softy Southerner's purse .
