I think our friend from Moreton in the Marsh is close to the answer of The Whistling Petrol Tank. If I open the filler cap it stops. A not-uncommon problem with bikes which are kept outside.

That time of the cash flow month so been messin abiut in the shed, found out tha a 160/60 tyre just fits in a 600 swing arm, don't handle to bad but think i may try the 120/70 in front when i fit the twin disc front as it feels like its running out of tread on hard corners, going up 1 tooth on f/sprocket has got gearing back to norm' as i lost 200rpm'ish per gear, also thinkin' of makeing my spare s/arm a deep brace look alike , don't know if it will be stiffer but should look the part. Also are the front pegs in a different position on the later model as i have polished a set up n they feeldifferent or is it just 'cos they are newer

It all started well.......... In the week I received some engine bars from teejayexc so I thought I'd get going on stripping them down and get ready to re-paint them. So I got started, well I'd already started yesterday. It's also time for the once a year silencer/downpipe maintenance so off they came. With them off I drained the oil and removed the oil filter. Time for a 'vidange'. A regular operation is also the gear-change lever which needs the rust removed and a Solvol polish. By mid afternoon I'd two Hammerite coats dry on the engine bars so I offered them up to see how they really sit. I got one in place and loosely secured the bolts. No problem, but when I tightened the bolt on the front engine mount it released straightaway. Bolt not long enough! Tried again but same result. I tried the other bar and it threaded OK but only 120°, not enough! I went to town to see if I can find longer bolts with no result. I'll have to try in the week when specialist ironmongers are open. Good job done on the pipes but rust has set in to the welds on my Marving silencers. Lots of time spent there. A good day with reservations.....

I found some longer bolts and the bars are now installed! Some Honda bolts fitted. Thanks teejayexc. (The cheque IS in the post). ;D A recurring problem has come back. My petrol tank has suffered some damage in the past, before I owned the bike, and a brazed repair to a minute vapour leak seems to let petrol loosen the covering paint after several months resulting in a 'bubble'. Ive covered it with Sinto Fer, metal filler, but that hasn't stopped the problem from coming back. Today I used a UHU epoxy stick filler, recommended for metal repairs, and resprayed the affected part of the tank. Might be the solution, I have to wait and see. So I wait......

I just installed a HID on my XJ600, very nice but there is a problem. The kit doesn't come with harness and if I start the bike with low beam (HID), like light won't turn on unless I cycle the switch.
I think a harness that connect the ballast directly to the battery would cure the problem, or would it?
Thanks!

Clive, that bike has obviously been looked after in the past ;D I put the carbs and tank back on my 600 'project' s'morning after the aforementioned strip and clean. Started reasonably well considering it's been standing a couple of years. It even settled down to a decently even tickover. I will balance the carbs when i have sorted a mullered bolthead in the manifold to 4 cylinder. I may have to borrow some welding kit to weld something on the bolt to shift it Next job is the rear wheel, which is very stiff to turn, even with the caliper removed. It will have to wait though as tomorrow I am answering a call for help from a mate who is experiencing problems with the carbs on his Virago 750

MOT due in a few weeks so... new spocket carrier bearing, rear wheel bearings still ok, cleaned and re-grease swingarm bearings and monoshock bushes, also took the time to give the rear end of the bike a good clean while i'd got the wheel, swingarm, shocl out of the way. fitted new front footpegs and cleaned up the rear caliper while it was off... New front wheel bearing, checked steering head bearings still to do, oil trottle cables as it's a little stiff and doesn't always return to idle on its own and remove HID headlight and fit standard bulb... Thats about it Flymo

After an enforced delay to decorate the Living Room I managed a few hours work on the Project D6 today.
Priority job is the clutch now that the engine is sorted. So...first job is drop the oil out. No chance! I had expected a tussle with the drain bolt as there is a manky old Nexxus 4 -2 - 1 system fitted. But I could'nt shift it, and the bolt was showing scars from previous tussles and looked ready to round off completely.
So I dropped the exhaust system. I intend to replace it anyway so it can come off now rather than later. It came off quite easily too. No problems with the header bolts.
With that out of the way I had free access to the drain plug. I have never seen khaki oil drain from an engine before, but I have now. Murky nappy yellow it was! And I needed 12" Footprints to shift the filter!
Does not exactly fill me with confidence for the condition of the bike internals if that's the standard of maintenance it has received.
So now I need a new exhaust system, and while I am waiting for that to arrive I can check the valve clearances.
To be continued....

Stripped the clutch. Quite decent really, both friction and metal plates within tolerances. Just the springs that need renewing.
So ordered a set from Wemoto along with a gasket of course.
And....today the new 4 - 1 exhaust system arrived...

Stripped the D9 Fairing off, tank off, straightened subframe, thankfully just some twisted lugs and no bent mainframe. Did a bit of wire re-routing, old fairing had sockets in, won't replace in other fairing, they can stay under the seat. Had a good clean up whilst naked , and hopefully she'll be back together tomorrow , just got to source some decent handlebar mirrors, see; diversionclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=11063

Fitted the exhaust.......... Getting there slowly but surely. When you have done a job like this then you certainly know your way around the bike.

Decided to change my fork dust seals today as they looked like this There was a fair amount of rust forming.. But a quick going over with some Solvol sorted things out The bike was jacked up using a block of wood and a jack under the exhaust headers, axle stands were there as a precaution Decided to re balance the wheel while it was out Fitted a front mudflap and all finished before lunchtime

Thought you'd have set about cleaning those headers whilst you had the front off

Thought you'd have set about cleaning those headers whilst you had the front off They need taking off and throwing in the bin, they are 100 times better than they were, I had to use wet and dry and solvol to get them to the stage they are now That's the problem with stainless steel when it gets old, it looks carp, wouldn't mind getting a set of original chrome ones.

Received led taillight yesterday, fitted it and it looks funky, but think i shall leave off till i get matching indicators to Finnish the look, may even see if ican make a headlight cover to match-as i have fitted a pair of led lights inside of indicators due to the fact a us market bike has not got side lights. This was easy i just used the original marker light wiring from the indicators

OK, technically this is null & void as it wasn't today and it's a preDivvy XJ600 but.... This week I have replaced chain & sprockets for what I suspect is the first time - underneath the front sprocket cover was more oily gunk than in the Gulf of Mexico. Took the opportunity to explore, dismantle, grease & reassemble the suspension linkages. Fitted a Neta 4into1 zorst, coutesy of Ebay, and oh b*ll*cks found that the nearside fork seal was also "doing a BP". So, off to Highline in Bradford for MOT-time and forkseal too please, mister.
It passed, so far so good, with new MOT, fork seal, chain, sprockets, exhaust, noticeably improved performance, I spent a very nice afternoon running errands for work on it yesterday, with a big silly grin on, until on m'way home - disaster- something electricky "blew" and the rev gauge, fuel gauge, indicators brakes & idiot lights are all non-functioning. For a desperate plea for help re this, see my posting in this section....

Today, I decided to sort out the spaghetti The wire that is out of focus in the foreground was melted due to a wiring issue from an old installation, I had to rewire part of the loom and then tidy up with insulation tape, looks brand new now

I was hoping to put my new front tyre on but it never arrived. I was going to take the forks off to change the oil to a 10w or 15w as I would have had front wheel off. So nothing constructive was done to the Divvy today. Tomorrows another day and i hope i can get on with the work needed.

Had a go at the project D6 today. Replaced both ignition coils for new ones. Also plug caps. Tried to get some from Halfords but the young lad there shook his head. Did'nt know what I was talking about. Seems they only sell the ignition lead kits you fit on your car.
Also checked the valve clearances. Which meant moving the carbs and oil cooler just to get clearance to slide the rocker cover out! Have a couple of dodgy clearances to see to, a tight inlet on number 1 and a loose inlet on 4. Could'nt check what shims were on those 2 as I am waiting for Fowlers to deliver the Yamaha valve tool.
Decent couple of hours work.
