My 92 600 somtimes has this prob,
First thing in the morning wont start. turns over slow then acts like battery is run down. I then jump start it with my booster pack then it starts first press of the button. 8 hours later when comming home from work it starts !
then somtimes I have to jump it then go not even 5 miles down the road, stop the bike and then when going back to the bike it will start no problem.
Today I bought a battery thinking it might be that. when I took the old battery (about a year old) out it was very warm and the case is distorted.
Any ideas ??

Knackered battery!.I had something like this when I used to drive a mighty reliant rialto 3 wheeler.I only found out the problem when driving in the dark. Sometimes the lights would suddenly be incredibly bright, like floodlights, fantastic, then back to normal, bright, normal, and so on. Eventually they stayed bright for about a minute and blew all the bulbs. Turned out to be the voltage regulator pumping out god knows how many volts intermittently which also went to the battery. Luckily I didn't fry the battery but I suppose it would have done preety soon. I would look first to check if your generator is overcharging, but if it's intermittent it's pretty hard to track down.

I fitted a new battery today. Went for a short trip to get some fuel. 2 miles in total. when I got back I felt the reg/rec unit. It was very warm. Is this normal?

The reg/rec does get hot but it sounds like your battery got fried. If you have access to a multimeter then a simple check of the charging voltage will give a clue. Otherwise it involves checking the resistance across the various wires to see if the generator is within tolerances. A bit of corrosion can also cause mayhem in the whole charging circuit.

My generator reg/rec failed and cooked the battery. It will burn out a new battery just as quickly. Anything more than 14 volts is dodgy. Unfortunately a new battery can hold the measured voltage down - until it goes pop. Electrex sell all the stuff needed for Diversion gennies or you could take a punt on fleabay. www.electrexworld.co.uk

I got a multimeter today and found out on tick over the reading is just over 14 volts which rises with the rev's.
Time for another reg/rec you think?

According to the Haynes manual the correct output with no load is 14.3 - 15.3v Any higher and it indicates a duff reg/rec.

Do they define "no load" with a battery connected that seems a bit high.

No load usually means just the engine running, no lights or ancillary electrical equipment on. The engine should be at normal working temperature.

hmmmm so Im thinking my old reg/rec is still faulty as somtimes the battery is hot somtimes not.
I bought a new one so hope to fit over the weekend.

I think you said the old battery's case had distorted, which certainly implies it was covergeating. Not good, anyway, as if it got too hot the contents (hot sulphuric acid) ould escape and do a lot of mischief.
