Just tootling along coming home when the petrol cut out,put left hand down and turned the tap facing up for reserve, nothing, cut out turning into cromford, near matlock bath in derbyshire. As luck would have it,next to a car park. Shook the bike from side to side, didn't appear to be any petrol at all.Nice walk carrying all my tackle to get some juice, plus £5.99 for a can and put it in. Put the tap on prime and it whirs away but won't start, never even offers to go.Soon have a flat battery at this rate.Had a sudden brain wave, the end of the petrol can pipe that goes on the can is a dead fit in the tank filler opening,so a good blow in the thin end pressurises the tank and pushes some juice through and the bike fires up straight away. Look like having to have a look at the tap me thinks.

Yes known the feeling too well got 1992 diversion. The think key to it is to turn the tap over to [prime]and sit and wait for five min's and they normally fire up. And not to do what i did first time round and kill the battery dead . No fun in the middle of the night on way home on country road.

You'll have to stick an electric fuel pump on it.... I had to with mine and it starts on the button - and within 5 seconds ;D
Really easy mod to do. Buy fuel pump off eBay, handover pump and bike to mechanic, go down the pub and pick up next day ;D

Any idea as to why I had no reserve?.Are there 2 pipes in the tank at different levels?, and if reserve doesn't get used much it could have some sediment in it. Just guessing before I have a look at it.

There are two pipes at different levels. Are you sure you weren't already on reserve by mistake?

Not discounting Pilgrim's idea, it could be the reserve gubbins inside the fuel tap leak/pass just enough to drain the reserve fuel level. There's a good chance the seals have gone hard with age.

Got the tap out.The long pipe on the tap up into the tank is missing so it's just draining all the petrol out, even below the lowest level of the short pipe.No wonder it was completely empty!!. It's not rattling round in the tank so somebody put it back like that at some time.Don't seem to be able to get just the 2 pipes without buying a complete tap assembly. I have some aluminium pipe that's a dead fit,I'm going to rig one up out of that a couple of inches taller than the reserve pipe.

Failing that you could try a model shop for some alloy or brass tube and some suitable epoxy metal.

Really, with all the hassle it's quicker and less work to just buy the tap or on ebay or a breaker........? I've found the word 'breaker' is no longer in the dictionary.....is this true and do we have to shop clean and not leave the house any more......? edit: not personal comment, just an observation.

A good point but it seems fuel taps are a common problem on D600s. Who knows if an ebay fuel tap will be any better and the main hassle is getting the tap off the bike.
