Hi Guys and Gals.
Ive had a good trawl through the forums here to look into an issue I have with my 92 600S.
Ive looked into and solevd the clutch rattle and the CCT is also OK but the problem I have is this:-
The bike when started ticks over fine, throttles fine with no noticable rattling but when im riding it circa 30 + mph i can hear a "tinny" rattle coming from somewhere. The noise is almost like if you were to 'ping' the side of a wine glass repeatedley.
Ill be honest its not bothering me too much but wondering if theres an easy fix. If its the exhaste, what the best way to check for leaks ?
Cheers Tone

if it is OK when idling the only thing i can think of is it may be the chain catching when you are on the move, have you checked the chain tension?

I'm not that mechanically minded & i'm sure someone will be along to answer this for you. Do you know roughly where it's coming from, front or rear? if it's the front it could be anything from a loose or vibrating scree/fairing to a loose lens on your mirror or if its the back, it could be a loose panel, try the joining panel above the tail light or the baffle in a silencer could be may be loose. These are just guesses but you never know it may be one of these. But i would check nuts & bolts for tightness.

Thanks Guys , Tinnitus Ive checked around various panels and had the fairing to bits a few times so will check again. Chain Tension is fine so i know it cant be that and tbh its more tinny sounding than the heavy knock of a chain. The noise is coming from the front half somewhere and it sounds to be the engine side of things. Ill have to have a rattle around and see if there are any shrouds or covers loose anywhere. As for the exhaust, are they strippable sections or are they sealed units? Could I get into them to check the baffles as its more that sound im getting. Cheers Again Tone

Could it be an exhaust leak around the ends of the downpipes? I have a loose pipe gasket (that one day I'll get sorted out) which sounds like a loud tappet.

CD, the prize is yours !
Took it out for a shakedown tonight and lo and behold when I got back and inspected it, one of the down pipes is loose around the gasket in the outlet port.
The next problem is that on attempting to tighten the plate up, i sheared te head off one of the studs AAARGGGHHH.
Anyone know the best way to remove a buggered stud from the block ?

Yo Tone buggered from d block ;D
wait for CD to help it's his fault it broke ;D
If you had waited I would have told you to get better ear phones to stop the tinny noise & no broken stud.
I'm sure some of our meca nickel geniuses will help out hope you get it sorted.

drill and reverse tap the hole and try getting it out that way? I had to take my 125 to a local welder who for 20 pound and a bit of magic weldin rod managed to pull the sucker out.

So are the studs are pressed into the block ? Or are they threaded into it ?

The studs are threaded in. If there is any metal sticking out, welding a nut onto it will expand the stud and with a bit of luck will be enough to loosen it and unscrew. If not they have to be drilled out and retapped.
Before you force any more studs - get them welded - again to loosen the threads. Then replace with stainless dome nuts and non stainless spring washers.
Make sure the generator electrics and battery are fully disconnected or the arc welding currents can blow them.

Cheers Guys,
I havent got access to a welder but i do have about 1" of the knacjerd stud poking out. Am I being naive in thinking that i could just try some thread loosener and force with a pair of grips ??
As one had already gone and the others will probaly be not far away I was going to repalce them all but seems to be a bugger of a job.
Also, whats the recommended Gasket material, Ive seen Copper, Ally and Fibre Alooy on line ? Also, what Dia oare the gaskets ?

You have to be very careful as the stud will probably be weakned by the force already used when it snapped. By all means soak it with PlusGas or similar, but dont force it. Welding a nut onto the stud should heat it enough for it to screw out easily. Brute force will probably shear it off against the casting. The stubborn nuts on mine all came off after they had a bead of weld put on.
You can get gaskets from Sandy Bike Spares. You'll need to fertle about in the exhaust port to dig out the old compressed gasket.

Cheers CD,
Is there a general 'best' gasket material ? Id imagine copper would be the most efficient ?

IIRC the ones I got from Sandy Bikes were like metal O rings. They had a copper sheath with fibre stuff inside. I've also seen them like a rolled up layers of thin metal and what looks like gasket material. They compress quite a lot when bolted up. For what they cost its not worth trying to make anything.
My gaskets for the other end were like soft graphite tubes. I guess they are a mixture of graphite and some sort of rockwool fibre.
BTW, do check the original pipe is ok. Sometimes bike headers can crack the flange at the top end of the pipe.
