Hello.Just bought one of these after a 20 year bikeless break,mid-life crisis and all that. It's a 1994 model and seems in good order.Had new bridgestone 45s front and back,new clutch and new chain and sprocket plus a good motad 4 into 1.Just a bit of rust here and there and odd paint chips.Pulls really well and plenty of poke,compared to a family car anyway. Everything works as it should except the front pads rattle a bit,the previous owner says it needs a shim,whatever that is.I paid £500 with 6 months tax and test.Was that a fair price?.

Sounds reasonable for a bike in good order with some tax (and presumably MoT). With a Divvy, age and mileage are less important than condition.

The shims are thin springy metal plates that fit to the back of the brake pads. They are supposed to stop the pads squealing.

It depends which shims you mean, there are the 'anti-squeel' plates that clip onto the back of the pads, however i believe the front brake doesnt have these, it does however have an anti rattle spring which applies pressure to the pads to stop them moving about and shaking in the caliper when not being used. I recently had a proiblem with mine because it hadnt been reinstalled properly (Oops!) but repositioning it stopped it rattling.
I think you could manufacture a similar item quite easily out of a piece of aluminium or similar, although it would be fiddly.

I wouldn't do that. Its a safety item and just not worth the risk. It would also be an MOT fail if its not correct.
BTW my blue spot brakes have the springy coverplate AND thin shims behind the pads. They still squeak and rattle so who knows how they would be without.
