Hi all! I was riding to work this morning and noticed my oil light come on as i pulled of my drive, then go off about 2 mins later? i checked the oil level window when i got to work and it was misted up with what looked like white/grey foam? what does this mean? when i bought the bike about 2 months ago the oil level was about 3/4 full to max line? also i had a look for the oil drain screw and couldnt find it, could anyone describe where abouts it is as i think i need to change the oil.
thanks in advance dave

Drain screw is a big bolt head on the bottom of the sump, by the collectors. The mist means the oil has water in it. This will mostly evaporate off on a long ride with the engine really getting up to heat, but the D6 does tend to do this, I reckon the fault of the oil radiator. I would get a nice long burn in, then change the oil, otherwise the water will stay in the pan and still be there when you fill the bike back up.
The oil light is level only not pressure, so it will tend to come on on left corners or hard accelaration, then go out. If it's on at all it means you need a top up. D6s do tend to burn a little oil, air cooled engines in general do due to the required increased tolerances.
Try to keep the oil on or about the upper level mark. They sound a bit happier then.

Readied my bike for a ride the other day and noticed the oil light came on, on side stand! Never done that before, but I had noticed it was getting very 'ticky' even when well warmed up. I checked the oil window and it was just above half way (bike upright, of course). I didn't measure how much oil I topped up with but filled it to the top line (no red light goes without saying) and a VERY QUIET engine. I'm with AMorti. BTW, have you noticed you need 2 and a bit litres of oil for a change and it's usually sold in 2l bottles..........

The extra is handy for top-ups between oil changes. Its cheaper in larger bottles so a great excuse to put more miles in. :-)
BTW, check the clutch release bearing on the clutch cover. A couple of people have had these collapse and damage the rack & pinion, but more to the point if the seal has failed water can get into the engine.

Oops.
How timely.
My oil light came on for the first time yesterday, and having just run the bike for ten minutes and left it for another ten, I checked the oil level.
600ml of 10W40 later, it's at a respectable level. And quiet.
ETA - Standard advice I've been given is to change the filter at every second oil change. If it's the first change since buying the bike you might want to change it over regardless.

I asked this on another thread as I'm changing my oil and filter while my exhausts are being changed (killing two birds with the one stone, as it were).
A decent semi-synthetic 10W40 is what I'm going for as I think the humble divvy 600 won't make much more use of a hi-spec fully snythetic oil.
Probably more effective to buy a decent but not super-performance oil and use the savings to enable oil changes a little more often.

Any old semi-synth 10/40. Hein Gericke sell 4 litres at £14 if they have it in stock, you can get your filter there too. Might as well do the filter since you don't know how long it's been there and the water may have damaged it or worn it faster.
All this makes me feel like checking my divvy's levels!

Just about to change my oil this service. It's supermarket 10/40 but at 2/3 usual interval because I'd rather use newer, cheaper, oil more frequently. A lot cheaper in the long run and fresher oil!

If you're not near a Hein Gericke shop, Halfords are doing 5 litres of semi synthetic for £24 (was £20 about a month ago) but you do get a free screwdriver set.... www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_221725_langId_-1_categoryId_165507 if you have a D6, 5 litres should be enough (just) for two oil changes (2.3l if you don't change oil filter, 2.6l if you do) If you can see white foam in the glass then chances are your crankcase breather tube is going to be blocked and you'll start having oil come out your air filter breather tube. Amorti has suggested a modification to prevent this.......

^^ replace the main breather with garden hose, as it doesn't kink. No need to be shy Hugh, I may have come up with it but I'd like it dropped into the collective pool of Divvy knowledge

managed to change the oil, does seem to run a bit better!! (after i had refilled to max line i started the engine and the level dropped to just over half way, then switched off engine and it went back to max. is this just normal pressure change?) i will check the breather hose also, thanks for the advice!

Hope it works as the oil patches it leaves behind after a long journey are a bit embarrasing....

It should sort it out mate. Assuming you also wiped out the airbox otherwise whatever's still in there will still leak out D6's do like to mark their territory, eh?
