Hi recently my 92 divvy has cut out on me while I've been riding along. When it does this I can't always get it to start up again there is just the click and a sort of whirr like the battery is flat (I charged it Saturday night tho!). It bumps ok but won't start itself can anybody help please? I've been looking up similar problems and it is sounding like the ignition coil but I'm not a mechanic or a sparky soooo I don't really want to spend £40 on something I may not need Please!!!!!! Stu

The fact it will bump start means there is nothing wrong with the ignition system.
A click from the starter solenoid generally means there is a bad connection in the heavy starter leads. It can also mean the starter brushes have worn out (lots of stuff on that so worth doing a search). Start there and then check out every connector block in the area. Corroded terminals will never do any good.

If I put the battery on the charger over night though I don't get it... I have been told it could be the alternator or rectifier and that I can find out by disconnecting the battery while the bike is running. Is that right?

Keep it simple: Discount the battery first, before assuming anything else is at fault. It may not hold charge well because it's tired - not because there is anything wrong with the bike's charging system or general electrics.

The connectors are however cheap and easy to look at.
BTW, dont charge the battery at more than 1 amp all it will do is boil electrolyte and shorten the battery life.
If it turns out the regulator has failed (mine did :-(), try Electrex. Mine was easy to diagnose - short circuit when connecting the (newly charged) battery. One by one I unplugged connector blocks and eventually found the short was in the alternator.
I got a new gennie from Ebay and a new battery from the local car spares shop.

I've got me an optimate for charging the battery until I can get it sorted properly I just gotta wait for my mate (who knows a hell of a lot more about tinkerin than me) to have a day or two free so he can do the testing for me.

An Optimate is a good tool to have. Its easy enough to check the connectors - pull them apart (they have a little retaining clip) and have a look. If they are green and gunky that might well be the problem.
Dont wait too long to get it fixed- it's probably ok, but if the voltage regulator is faulty it will duff up the battery.

It was the rectifier!!!! I was due to take it to be looked at but then the other morning it just started puffing out smoke! I thought I could smell popcorn and then laid a brick when I saw the smoke comin from under the tank. . it looked like the petrol tank at the time anyways.... at least it was payday!

Check out that battery - blown regulators can sometimes fry the battery.
