i had the bike on the mainstand today having a look at the rear brake and noticed the mainstand had considerable play left to right. i could 'shake' the bike by moving the rear wheel in my hand.
Does the mainstand have bearings which require replacing or is it simply a design flaw that the mainstand has some movement?

There are no beaings to replace. You could pull it off and have a look, but they all seem to do it. Be glad its not as weak as the 900 centre stand.

im tempted to cable tie it up and out of the way anyway as i reguarly take it off road into fields/gravel paths/farm tracks etc and the thing keeps bouncing and rattling around. i only use it for maintenance but would rather leave it in situ should i need it. Thanks for clarifying this design flaw with me

Hondas seem to have fairly good centre stands but most Japanese makers dont make much effort.

If you don't use it regularly, leave it off and attach it (without the spring, which is the main hassle) just when you need it for maintenance.
