I've got the bearings out of the back wheel without too much difficulty, but to my surprise there was no spacer between them when I'd have expected to find one, according to the exploded view in the Haynes book.
I know Haynes isn't always 100pc reliable, but does anyone know if a 98 Divvy does without a spacer, or has a previous owner been careless? And if so, am I inviting disaster in reassembling the wheel as I found it?

Where are you looking? There is one pressed into the sprocket carrier bearing, it's easy to miss.

Thanks for the link, Salona. It's part no 5, described as collar 3HE. Amorti, I'd been warned about the collar pressed into the sprocket carrier bearing, so I was waiting for it. But I see what you mean about it being easy to miss, with a high risk of it being chucked out with the old bearing.

Should very definitely be a spacer there, if not the bearings won't last long as when you tighten the axle up, you are tightening against the bearings. Not ideal! I suspect it also introduces the risk that when the bearings fail (they will) the axle goes loose.
