While the downipes are off (new exhaust, hooray) I thought I'd change the oil.
What's the usual/best choice for the oil and filter? Is it worth using a fully synthetic oil?

Is it worth using a fully synthetic oil? an oil filter, use any thats available, Halfords stock them, for oil dont use fully synthetic, its a waste on a divvie, use semi synthetic, motorbike oil, though I used normal car oil in mine and it was fine

I use Texaco Havoline 10/40 semi-synth, I get it from Morrisons Petrol Stations for £14 a gallon. I use it in all my bikes, no probs.

Excellent - I have a Morrisons nearby.
Will I need to invest in a tool to get the filter off?

you can use a chain whip or a strap wrench, but it's well worth buying a filter socket. Worth its weight in gold!

Filter removal is best planned when the exhausts are off the bike, then you don't need a special tool! ;D I use the same strap wrench as I use on my car, and I've probably only 15° movement under my VW bonnet. I thoroughly clean the downpipes twice a year and the filter change might be needed once a year at the most. You can plan that easily ahead......

A strap wrench is fnie for getting the old filter off, but it's best to use the proper tool with a torque wrench to fit the new one. Probably if the downpipes are off, you would be able to get the filter cartridge tight enough by hand, but when they're on I can't think of any other way of getting hold of it that wouldn't risk damaging it.

I use semi-synth car oil in my 900 no problems.
My last filter was a champion. I fit by hand only dont forget to oil the seal and dont screw it too tight. There's no need to use the strap wrench but they can be handy if someone has overtightened the old filter.
