It might be the gearbox (things like gear whine, or vibes going up with road speed), but generally GB noise will happen in all gears; at least to some extent. Check the chain tension and fairing. An overtight chain can make funny noises and plastic rattles can sound horrendous when not masked by engine noise. Another place to look is the gearbox final drive bearing. Running the chain too tight it will duff it up. Good news it should be easy enough to replace. Come to think of it, another noise source is the rear wheel and sprocket carrier bearings, though these often get picked up on the MOT. Check all the easy stuff first. Divvie gearboxes are not noted for going wrong.
