Ok so this is now the second time i've ran the bike dry, and this time in just over 200miles of pillion carrying at mid-high revs, so reaslistically that isnt a bad consumption i'd say.
however like i say, i ran the tank dry, went to switch to reserve (with my fingers crossed) and once again there was no hope in it starting on reserve. I dont think the reserve is actually reserving any fuel at all.
It will however run on reserve so it's not like the 'thing' in the tank is blocked!
I think Darren mentioned once his divvy does the same, ideally i'd like to fix this as i don't like having such a varying fuel economy and not knowing when i need to fill up!

The only way to find out is to strip the fuel tap.

Ok well heres a question...
How do i empty the fuel from it! I've only ever emptied a gs500 tank which is gravity fed!

You don't say if 'prime' (gravity) position works. It's between on and reserve positions and might save you from spilling all your fuel via the filler cap method!

Drive the bike as normal. When it's getting towards empty tank mileage take a spare fuel can with you and add just enough to get you home. ;D
The part full tank can be laid on its side or it's front end and the fuel will be below the fuel tap.
If you do this on Dad's maniucured lawn, expect all heck to break loose a day ot two later when he sees the patches of dead grass from spilled petrol. (and it takes AGES to grow back!!!)

Ah yes i forgot about prime *blush* Well i've just filled my tank up so i'll get round to sorting it out in about 200 miles no doubt Dave, my dads lawn isnt in the bes tof shapes anyway considering 190kg of divvy roles over it daily, unlike with my smaller bikes we cant get this one round the sharp bend in the garden path, i could pick up the sports bike but not this beasty!

Try it with a 900 well over 1/4 tonne fully fuelled up!!!!
Seriously though if "prime" isnt the cause, when the tank is nearly empty you can always hang it up in the garage so the fuel level is below the tap.
For the lawn you could get some grass reinforcing plastic mesh. Simply lay it over the grass and the grass grows through. I used it when I had three big dogs who turned the original lawn into a quagmire. It did a fab job but if you do go that way, be careful until the grass has warpped over the mesh as it's a bit slippy.

Dude I am not trying to be patronising (and really hope I don't end up souonding like a smeg-head now) but after 200 miles is there any fuel in the tank? I recently had a problem with my divvy 600 and thought my fuel tap was faulty so me and a mate took the fuel tank off and found that one of the straws, that go up into the tank from the tap, had come off and was rolling around inside the tank. This meant that when I didn't have reserve selected I'd used up the whole of my fuel tank and IF I ran it on reserve til it ran out I could switch it to ON and I'd still have a dregg or two as reserve. . . could this be the problem I had?
It was bloomin akward getting that loose straw out btw!

There doesnt appear to be any fuel in the tank to be fair, and the only way i could get it to even run for a second or two was on choke!
Im going to have the tnak petcock thing appart, see if that sorts it.

Good point Thmrs2. I had that happen on an old Brit bike but never on a Jap bike. Could be the solution.
Hey you could always have the 900's hopless fuel gauge. 33% used before it moves 66% used and its showing empty 75% used and the warning light comes on 50 miles later it runs out. Just when you really need a fuel gauge you are running on guesswork
Then you find out that 24 litre tank takes 22 lires from bone dry to brim full. Top work Yamaha. Give me a (working) reserve any day.

My divvy cut out on me recently, still fuel in the tank and the thing wouldn't start on reserve RAC chap filled it back up and the bugger started Suspected the fuel filter so went to down to yamaha dealer next day, got new filter(£13) and fitted. Since then had no probs, was on run to Ayr and bike cut out so switched to reserve, but this time it started with no dramas. ;D Hope this helps
