uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20070514/tuk-uk-britain-smoking-fa6b408.htmlhhhmmmmmm it would appear that some people still think there are police patrol cars out there chasing/catching drunk drivers and stolen cars? Haven't seen that for years.. (sorry you police members ) and as for flicking the still hot cig ends out of the window, well what ever next!! No mention what they 'might' do to us on two wheels. so stop smoking, eating , drinking while moving. then ban changing your music station on the radio, or swopping cd's!! then ban talking to passengers as this is also distracting. oh then ban any transport.. of course, we wouldn't smoke while riding, (don't smoke anyway) and we never eat and drink while on the move listening to music and chatting. we wouldn't do that would we ;D Link now working(Reaper)

If they can ban mobiles for the distraction and fine people for eating while sitting at traffic lights, then I see no reason why smoking while driving shouldn't be banned too. It's far more distracting than eating a chocolate bar whilst stationary.
Not to mention the benefits to health and the environment, maybe it should be taxed ;-)

They could seriously effect your riding habit's? Wouldn't need one of those steering wheel locks that go through your wheel though

Banning smoking from car would be great. I get sick of folks with their arms out of cars with their fag ends dangling out... Then they just flick them, without a care as to where they go..

It's far more distracting than eating a chocolate bar whilst stationary. Not to mention the benefits to health and the environment, maybe it should be taxed ;-) I would like to put the other point of view. I ride (aound 8,000 miles a year) and I drive (around 20,000 miles a year). I also smoke. To say that smoking distracts you from driving, or "It's far more distracting than eating a chocolate bar whilst stationary" is in my view a fallacy and a point of view put forward by folks who don't smoke and have never had a fag. Apart from 5 seconds when lighting the damn thing. Smoking can be done virtually unconciuosly it takes no real brain activity to smoke. Any driver can be more distracted with his / her own thougts and worries about, work, mortgages, children. I drive the same 46 mile route to an from work every day and sometime I arrive home with no recollection of large chunks of the journey not because I had three fags but because I was thinking about other things and been on auto pilot. BTW I have been doing this sort of mileage for the last 20 years and have never driven into anyone or anything. As I say I thought that someone should put the other point of view.

I think the point is though, that just because the law is an ass regarding phones & snacking, it doesn't mean we should just accept it's further ingress into our lives. The issue should be 'distraction' & it's affects on your control. Specifying individual tasks as 'worse' only serves to show the rules for the mockery they are. Perfectly adequate legislation already existed to prosecute motorists for lack of due care & attention, without the specific phone offence, for example.

But as someone already said its the fairly thick part of an even thicker wedge. Take this much further: Radios banned except remote controls, Anyone with one hand off the wheel, Anyone with passengers unless driver has a separate cage like a London cab Cars must be automatic because one hand has to be removed from the wheel.
BTW today the police are complaining (rightly IMO) that govt targets are making them make silly arrests. You know who's driving this trend.
