I whole-heartedly agree with Martin - the NHS is a fine institution, and something we should be proud of.The fact is that thatcher and successive tory governments pared funding to the bone and brought the NHS to it's knees.Yes, labour have had trouble getting a handle on things and the way they have gone about things is less than perfect but the fact remains that the NHS is vastly better funded and equipped than it was under the tories. And Bev, old chap..... me and me mates were all the clever ones....that's why I got to do useful subjects like latin

GM I've no doubt you're a clever git, but when I went to school, admittedly some years before you and before we dropped standards, only one could be top of the class.
I do agree that the NHS is a worthy institution.

I don't usually get involved with political discussions for 3 reasons:
1: I respect someone else's opinion and likewise would hope that they would respect mine
2: I might feel any different about them if I knew there stance on a sensitive subject
3: I'm too busy taking the mick.
So can I suggest that we stop berating each other and have a discussion on a harmless subject: Religion- Who's your favorite God?

Thing is....I remember the hardship my Dad was going through in the RAF back in the 70's when Labour was in power...he was getting paid less than the garbage men but was made to clear the streets when they were on strike. Then Tories came in and he got a pay rise of three times the amount. To be honest....no MP is worth their weight as far as I'm concerned...they're all the same. Promise the World to get into power and then shaft us little people who got em in. Balls to em I say!! U sure it was the RAF he was in and not the PUB!

Its not about spending money its about getting value for what is spent. The NHS is amazing but it could be so much better. Money seems to fall into a black hole of overhead costs and yet there are never enough frontline staff.

That's cos of the fat-cat execs at the top who apparently run the Wards...instead they create havoc with the staff and pour money down the pan!

Whoever gets in to power, forever and a day we will be moaning and griping about them just as much.
If anyone can do better, get into politics and take the world by storm !!
I think all MPs do a better job than the media want us to believe.

My mother's next door neighbour used to be an NHS manager. he got so sick of the system preventing him from achieving anything he's left. Its sad because he is the sort of person the NHS needs. But the system grinds people down. hardly surprising with 1.3 million employees.

Not really comfortable with postin on this topic, it always becomes too debatable and then arguemnts will undoubtedly occurr. Succeeding PM's to a long serving PM ie.Wilson Callahan,Thatcher MAjor and now Blair Brown never succeed in changing the direction of voters. The damage has usually already been done. And yes Brown has raided our pensions, taxed us on our holidays etc, but you see however much of a beating I get from these buggers, I can never be comfortable with .... Cameron the working mans Tory or menzies still sounds like a disease ... Sorry PBD

You forgot about doubling the NHS finds for zero return. Factually privates & therefore a good reason why this bike forum should avoid politics. Is it? It's at leat half true, Labour did dramatically increase NHS funding. Not sure if it was doubled, though.

Whoever gets in to power, forever and a day we will be moaning and griping about them just as much. I'm not sure. If almost anybody else in the cabinet had been PM Iraq simply wouldn't have happened. (Or at least wouldn't have involved us). Blair was (more or less) the only one in the cabinet who thought Iraq was a good idea and at least half the cabinet vocally opposed it in cabinet. So I would argue on the single most important issue of Blairs leadership (and, who knows, if Iran develop a workable Nuclear Bomb maybe the single most important issue the world has ever seen) Blair was wrong and almost anybody else in his party would have been right.

I think the Labour party *were* disapointed with the results of the huge amount of cash they spent. (Hence my "They didn't see that coming." ) I suspect nobody really knows how much benifit the cash actually reaped. Certainly can't have hurt.

I'm not sure. If almost anybody else in the cabinet had been PM Iraq simply wouldn't have happened. Yes - We need to thank Tony for saving us all from the 45-min-deployable WMDs. Them pesky REDS in his cabinet would have seen us all dead or under the heavy boot of that tyrant Hussein. I can't help feeling there must be better places to discuss politics than here. I vote (1st past the post) for a politics board.
