if it's the same as a '95 D6 pointing down it main, horizontal is prime, and pointing up is reserve.

Thankyou very much guys though for some reason it runs a little rich when in that position plus there's a smell of fuel when like that....

On prime it will ignore the vacuum valve, and pour fuel through all the time whether the engine is running or not. Not to be used in most cases.

Prime is just like an old-fashioned petrol tap, so it shouldn't do any harm to run the bike in that position (except of course you won't have any reserve).
If there's a smell of petrol with it in that position, at least when the engine's cold, it could be a stuck float valve. Leave it in the prime position for a reasonable amount of time (several minures - with the engine not running) and see if there's any external evidence of petrol seeping out from one of the carbs.
When the engine's hot there wil be a bit of a smell as the petrol evaporates from the float chambers due to the heat.

Ahhh well, when i was checking over my bike this morning, i put the tap to main, i.e. normal, (down position) and fuel started leaking from the tap itself, hmmmmm. doesnt do that when on reserve or prime though. strange

Sounds like the sealing rubber has split. You should be able to get a new seal kit.
