do we crash that differently from the way the yanks did 20-30 years ago? Personally I don't crash at all these days. It's overated & you get little sympathy. 20-30 years ago I clearly crashed differently to those yanks . ............ land on the chin? What the hell were they doing??

But do we crash that differently from the way the yanks did 20-30 years ago?
I suspect we do. The Yanks predominantly ride custom type bikes with feet forward while we don't, unless we are a solicitor or Doctor trying to be 'Born to be wild' at the weekend.
Crashing will produce quite different catapult type effects.

The time I had an accident (late 1970's) where the helmet almost certainly saved me I was hit by car parked in a layby who suddenly decided to do a U turn. I went over his bonnet and landed backward against a low wall. Back of helmet stoved in, but I didn't even get a headache. Rucksack protected my back. Helmet was an ACU Gold approved Cromwell full face that was actually too big for me and the quiet-est helmet I have ever had.
I've recently tried a back protector but it was horribly uncomfortable. The new KTM neck brace looks good but cost >£300 and its black/orange style alone would put me off

my Schuberth C2 is fairly quiet, though it seemed very tight when i bought it, but has wore in now, it has the catch to one side, flip fronts with the central catch i would suspect are vulnerable to opening in a crash, but have no evidence to support this

The System 5 was supposed to be 2 or 3 Db louder than the C2 (and I got mine on special offer), but its only quiet if I stand on the footrests. Any blast off the screen is loud and on naked bikes there's still enough stuff coming off mirrors & clocks to need earplugs from wind noise alone. At least that's how it happens on my head anyway. Which is the helmet maker's standard get out clause.

Interesting discussion on helmet safety regarding how much noise they do or do not protect u from. Have always understood that the twa (Time weighted Average) had something to do with the mandatory level of 90dB and for no more than 1 hour. So...... 20 mins ride to work without plugs, Runs and meets with plugs. Although goodness knows what dB levels actually occur in ur helmet. PBD

Thank you all for your input, but I think I worded my original post poorly.
Most of the advise above is the sort I would give anyone myself. What I was after more was reviews of helmets you have had and used in recent times (ie still on the market) so that I don't go picking a pile of carp. Let me know about bad features such as thing that brake easily or fall apart and difficult features to use so I can avoid them.
I would like to spend more on a lid but unfortunately times do not permit.
So let me know of what you think of what is on the market to help me make the best choice for my money.

Greetings i presently use a laser Revolution which is a flip up and like most of them is noisy(i always wear plugs)however i dont have a problem with its weight i have been able to wear it all day without any side affects however a long day of riding does give me a slight headache im not sure if this is caused by the weight of the helmet or wind noise or simply fatigue
the only problem i have with it is if its raining its steams up a little so i open the visor a notch and it then lets water in the top of the visor
it cost me £150 a couple of years ago and as far as im aware its still available so right place right time you might be able to get it for less
as for safety in an accident i have spoken to laser and they have tested it in a variety of impacts including full frontal and it passed with flying colours(so to speak) however it isnt acu gold approved (seat belt type fastening not D ring)so cant be used on a track also isn't designed to be used with the flip-up UP (as fas as accidents are concerned)however i have used mine for over 2 years and when ever im in town (slow moving traffic) and its warm i have the flip-UP it also has the internal sun visor (like the caberg)but unlike the caberg the sun visor is connected to the flip so when the flip-up is up you lose the sunvisor however i recently tried on the new Caberg GT and will be getting that one as it wipes the floor with feel and comfort over the Laser ;D

The System 5 was supposed to be 2 or 3 Db louder than the C2 Chiro, a 3Db increase in sound is double the volume. Db is a logarithmic scale, so 90Db is twice a loud as 87Db. No wonder the system 5 was louder than the C2.

I know its "only" 3 Db but other hats were way louder than that so I went for the closest at a budget I could afford. But I'd also be surprised if mine is anywhere near 90dB its painful above 70 without plugs. A £100 Trip is proably no worse. The Db scale anly measures sound pressue it has no indication of pitch and high freqs are far worse than low, though low freq noise is the most annoying for me.
Many bikers dont even think about ear plus so I'm surprised they aren't all stone deaf - Pardon?

Will be getting SWMBO a Caberg Trip when her size/colour choice comes into the shop. She liked it and she is renowned for being fussy so it must be good. She is also notoriously claustrophobic and likes the rapid release on the flip and the "cool" flip down tinted visor. Cost - just about the £100 mark.
Personally I fancy a Craft RX 6 Evolution, but then I always wanted to be a Star Wars stormtrooper. I haven't had chance to try one on yet.
Currently using a Rayven (model name escapes me) that I got for 50 notes as obsolete stock from Bikers Gearbox in Matlock Bath. At the time I was riding the ancient Beemer so it must have been 4 or 5 years ago. Its been great and I will be sad to sideline it.
