Here an interesting product: www.buybits.com/product/sku_3561.aspx , a bike mounted waterproof casing for a car sat nav. Does anyone have any experience with this? It could certainly be a cheaper option than a dedicated bike unit.

These boxes are great - a bit bulky but they do keep the contents dry & very well protected from knocks. (except that the windows are flexible to allow the touch screen to be operated & therefore it is a weak point). Most boxes like this have no provision for cables to connect to the outside world so power / chargng & audio output functions can be used. There are some which do have gland systems tho' & these are the way to go IMHO.

Yep, I use exactly this box on a RAM mount on both my Divvy 600 on a bar mount and a Telferizer RAM mount for the VFR.
They do have provision for cables into the box, I've wired both bikes for USB power cables and phono, run a car tomtom through it, also fitted a 2.5mm phono socket to the same unit for audio (warning - invalidates warranty if not already fitted to your unit) but lots of guys I ride with on bike specific GPS don't use sound so not a requirement - I just prefer to be told where to go.
All works a treat.
Ever so slightly more bulky than a bike specific unit but at a third of the price of a bike only unit and transportable between bikes/car - who's complaining?

Gonna time to upgrade my Streetpilot III soon....mind you I been saying that for 2 years now and it still works just fine !
Looks like this could be a decent alternative.

Point to note on this - if you fit a widescreen GPS into the box as pictured you will have plug space issues inside the box.
RAM do bigger ones but you're getting into the realms of impracticle, I used a bigger one on a Buell for a trip to Denmark last year. I got away with it because it was a naked bike, you might not with a faired one.
I just have a tomtom one V3, customised for sound and in the box pictured. Works well.
Grimster out.
