Yeah, right - like I'm going to give precise details so that every little deviation can become a source of ridicule .
But this much is true:
Meet at Chieveley Services, Junction13 of the M4 / A34 roundabout. No approach details needed - whichever way you approach from, you end up at the same services. You can't accidentally end up on the 'wrong' side .
Time: Plan to leave the services at 10:30am sharp, so arrive early if you want breakfast. I'll be there, waiting, from 10:00am.
Route will be approx 85 miles - Smaller A roads & B roads. Subject to variation according to conditions. (There's my 'I wasn't lost!' get-out clause should any U-turns be required .)
Loo / Ciggy stop around 11:30am
Lunch will be around 1:00pm
Might make you look at some Buells on the way around .
Route will be circular - ending back at Chieveley Services for approx 3:00pm.
As this first run of 2007 might attract even greater numbers than 2006's similar January run, please sign-up on the sign-up sheet when it appears so that I'm clear who I'm waiting for at the start.
Martin.

I'll probably stop for breakfast at McDonalds on the A34, I usually do if I'm heading down that way.
It's the one at the Milton Interchange, Didcot (just a few miles south of Oxford) if anyone wants to meet there? Probably try and get there 9-9:20. Then it's only another 20 mins or so to the meeting point.

Thanks for the sign-up sheet, Paul. Odd - I emailed Doofer for one, & Paul creates it. I'm sure there's nothing going on there at all .
Paul (Beebs) - They do do brekkie at the start you know . (Or are you planning on more than one ??
Colin - There can be no 'seen' errors this year . Good luck with the FJR. Will she need running-in??

I want a cheap one! I know, I'm sorry... you can't please us all

I think I know you well enough to know when you have made a wrong turn Martin
No the bike will not need running in, have to "Take It Easy" for the first 100 miles or so though
Have to stay in 3rd then
Going down there tomorrow to see how its going, fingers crossed

But maybe calling it the "Berks Run" might give people the wrong impression?

Sorry Martin,
I had to work today so hadn't got around to creating your signup sheet for you
Thanks Paul for doing that for me

Colin,
Martin's run is next weekend, not tomorrow, so with luck you bike will be ready and your busy work schedule will allow you to have some fun

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the wind stays down.

"I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the wind stays down."
I guess that depends on what you have for brekky . Better out than in, say I. Preferably before you get to the run start .

Hi Martin
Will have to make a last minute decision on this run as I am meant to be somewhere else in the morning, where is the lunch stop likely to be ?
Regards
Dave ;D
From: Fiasco Sent: 04/01/2007 16:25
Ps ............
Why a Chievely meet ?
Looking at the sign up sheet it is not on the way for anyone ?
Just Curious (I am sure it is due to some gravel pathway you want to take everyone down )
Cheers

Dave,
I wanted to start elsewhere but Greeny chided me about last year's start place not being open for brekkie .
It's all Greeny's fault .
Anyway - A34/M4 junction13 seems pretty central / easy to get to from North/South/East/West??
Lunch stop is one of three places - haven't decided yet 'cos one is pricier than the others but more suitably-located for the planned run . I will prob go with one of the cheaper options, which will be Fox's Diner or Dashwood Arms.
From: Beebs-TDM9 Sent: 04/01/2007 17:54
Martin, I've got no issue with the start of the run being there... perfectly convenient for us hardened Northerners (if I can brave the wind)
However, Dave.... Any chance of moving the start of Postcombe, say 7 days as it clashes with Walsall Beer Festival?!
From: Fiasco Sent: 04/01/2007 18:24
Wasn't questioning the start for any reason apart from curiosity, I know Martin wouldn't choose a service station for a breakfast meet so guessed it was a route based decision.
Quite happy to have a bimble down the B4009 if I can make the run, or if I can get up early enough possibly meet Beebs at Milton for some cardboard eggs and hash browns !
Dave

Just a thought....
I'd have thought the Oxford Services (Jn 8 on M40) would better suit most of those coming (from the sign up list)
... and it'll be open for Brekkie
... and it's in Oxon
Depends on your planned route of course. It's your call
Paul
From: TrophyM40Man Sent: 04/01/2007 18:59
Sorry Paul - Those services are not really handy for the run I had in mind. I just don't know enough decent roads to pick around there either, though I'm sure they exist.
The Chieveley start will of course be open for breakfast / loos etc. That's specifically why it was chosen over the original start I had in mind (which was the Waitrose cafe, A4 Roundabout in Newbury, RG14).
Fiasco is right - I don't like services at all. So I certainly wouldn't want to swap the start from one naff service area to another. This start gets me straight onto decent roads within less than 1/2 mile.
Martin.

OK Martin - no problem.
Looking forward to the run and the weather forecast is looking reasonable - maybe a bit windy but dry.

Greetings, Runsters.
I have recieved a question from one of our 'party' regarding the run rules in place for this run.
Subject to overide on the day, if any objections are raised - I will not be asking riders to observe a no-overtaking policy. (This does not mean anyone is being asked to overtake anyone else!)
My reasons are as follows:
1. Someone asked!
2. Everyone who has so far expressed an interest in this run has ridden in a group & are experienced (some more than others) in group runs & everyone knows every else.
3. I expect, knowing you all, that any overtaking will be moderated for the conditions on the day & performed with due regard to your peers & other road users, as you would overtake anyone else in your normal course of making progress in your normal business of riding your bike.
4. No boy or girl racers appear to have signed-up yet.
5. This is going to be quite a small group, & observations are that much easier with only a few bikes.
6. You're prepared to make an effort to come out to play with me in January so whilst I may be getting on a bit - I'm not gonna behave like your Dad!
Despite the above I would like to remind folks of the prevalence around here of folks on horseback, & in some parts walkers on the roads. I'm sure you will all be responsible sorts, whether you overtake or not.
Anyone concerned / objecting to the above, please see me in the morning. A quiet word to me will see the no-overtaking rule restored. You will not be identified to anyone else in the group, unless you talk loud!
Anyone preferring to raise any concerns in advance, privacy guarenteed, please email me .......

I will be a BACK MARKER then if there is an overtake rule in place
I have to take it easy on the FJR for a while and the temptaion would be TOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Great to stay behind you (Yes I know your leading the run but thats never stoped either of us )
Collect bike in the morning ;D
From: Fiasco Sent: 05/01/2007 19:37
I object to Colin being back marker, after all I owe him a couple of overtakes
I object to Martin being my Dad, he was too old for a Fazer so must be a Great Grandpa at least
Happy with the overtaking rule personally, if that rocket powered whippersnapper Greeny comes rushing up behind me it saves pretending to stop and do up my shoelace
I intend to attend by the way, Teffort and I plan to meet at McDonalds Benson at about 9am if anyone is passing that way. Teff if you get this please confirm this is ok and it will save me calling you.
Look forward to seeing you all Sunday if the food poisening doesn't strike again !
Dave
From: TrophyM40Man Sent: 05/01/2007 19:58
"if there is an overtake rule in place "
Pay attention, Colin! There is not an overtake rule in place.
There's just not a "no-overtake" rule in place (subject to any requests to invoke one!)
I'm sure you'll manage to stay behind me -- you normally do ;-)
Dave - don't forget Father's Day! I might even meet you at your start, let you buy the old man a coffee ;-)

I will be a BACK MARKER then if there is an overtake rule in place
The rule in place is that there is an overtaking rule in place, so by that statement your saying that there IS an overtake rule in place but not the normal No-Overtake rule in place this is not the normal rule for overtaking when we do a run its a different rule for overtaking that you have now put in place so by my statement above I was refering to the overtake rule that you have stated and not the normal overtake rule that we use
See its as clear as mud

I'm a girl racer...now that Helga has a fairing again
Hhhmmm, as I live on the M40 just inside the M25 I might just head straight for the start rather than meet up with anyone.....

OK folks - did a part-test this morning. Shamefully, in the car! (I didn't think I'd get my kit dry in time for tomorrow - honest!)
Sadly the Buell showroom will be closed tomorrow, but we'll still swing by for a f*g-break / gawp in the window ;-)
Sat on the new 1200, low-seat Buell today - perfect for shorties like me. I think I'll take out a 900 & a 1200 in February for a wee test ride, see if they handle like they're alleged to ;-)
Got made a couple of nice offers!
Not sure a pillion would be that happy, though!
I'm away much of January - very little riding opportunities :-(
Anyway - The Run: I needed to test part to make sure I don't miss any turns. Some good fast open bits, some twiddly bits, and an "on purpose" apparent turnabout on a roundabout - just so you know it's planned! (Need a one-way exit).
A nice bimble over a toll bridge - bikes are free. (Cars cost 5p, so yet another reason to ride, not drive!)
Pretty villages, only met two horses today, no walkers!! Well, it was hissing down.
I will most likely be on the CX500 tomorrow - haven't quite decided for sure. It's the only bike with no heated grips, but everything works! I'll bore you with the probs with the others when we meet.
Thinking of finishing at either Fox's diner or the Dashwood Arms instead of returning to the start. Mainly because either place is more convivial than the services. Which one depends on progress / any route changes according to conditions. But I'll take anyone back to Cheiveley afterwards if required of course.
Some roads are a bit "agricultural" so don't bother specially polishing your bike 'cos it won't stay clean!
Martin.

I will be calling into Martin's in the morning IN THE CAR
Collected the FJR
Started her up
Pulled off down the road
NO Noise, NO Vibrations, Smoother than ever
Onto the A350, open her up a little (got to take it easy) and.......................

.BANG
Engine cuts out.
Phone shop, they come out right away, have a look and onto the back of the van
That little black box they have been waiting for, for the past week or so has done exactly the same as before and blown itself to bits
At least this time I don't have to pay for it to be fixed.
The FJR is back in the workshop, the bonus part is that while she only went for about 3 miles, it was the smoothest 3 miles I have ever had out of her
Shame it wasn't more
