Check to see if the cable is frayed, or caught up on the clutch lever. Check to see if anything (clothing/liggage strap) is catching in the clutch actuation lever, down by the foot controls. Follow the route of the clutch cable to see if it is snagging anywhere. Especially if it runs near something that gets hot. If the outer cable is getting hoty and soft that could explain things. Erm, other than that, unless I were to see the thing, I would be a bit stuck for more ideas. RMJ

Whats your oil level like ? Could be that if its a bit low that the clutch is getting very hot and expanding. Causing the bite point to move.

I'm with Kabulcalling - check the cables. IMO the oil level really shouldnt affect the clutch. There should be no heat generated by the clutch - unless is slipping.

I'd be very surprised if the adjustment going out when hot was down to the cables. If there's a lot of enthusiastic starts, the clutch will get hot.Too many and the plates can warp and the springs weaken over time.

if that latter was the problem that would mean a clutch replacement at what sort of cost is involved here

would think that friction plates are gonna be around £30-40 for a set, and springs are about £8 a set. And it's a dead easy job to do.

You could allways order a set of Reapers workshop DVD's. I'm pretty sure that he shows the clutch being removed and replaced. £15 well spent.

18K seems a short mileage for the clutch to have gone, but who knows its history. Someone was just asking about a clutch actuating arm return spring. Could that spring be the cause?
