Getting there....... If travelling from the south / west by motorway, turn off the M62, J38, signposted North Cave and follow the B1230 all the way into Beverley. Don't let the Beverley signpost on the motorway confuse you.....it's meant for LGV's. May I advise anyone approaching Beverley for the first time route via the south west, by the A1035 or the B1230. Why? You'll be treated with one of the finest views of an approach to a town/city that you'll ever see. If the light is right, it is truely outstanding. The Minster stands out magnificently as you pass through the Westwood common land that surrounds. It's a view that lifts me every time, like it would have done the pilgrims approaching the end of their own long journeys. If you approach from the south ie. A164, divert through Bently/east of Walkington for the B1230, or pick up the signs for the Racecourse/York for the A1035. There are only two roads that lead into Saturday Market Square due to the one way street system.......If travelling along the A1035 from the west past the racecourse, or south down the A164 from Driffield , you'll eventually come to a set of traffic lights by "The Rose and Crown" pub, beside the "NorthBar" town gate...... 1. Go through the Bar. Onto "North Bar Within".2. Follow the one way system which takes you around to the left, past St Mary's Church and onto "Hengate". Take right hand lane. 3. Traffic Lights (looking at Cornerhouse pub) turn Right onto "New Walkergate" then almost immediately.... 4. Turn right alongside the Bus Station onto "Sow Hill Road" which leads you onto the Saturday Market Square If coming up the A164 from the Humber, or along the B1230 from the Motorway you'll come to a mini double roundabout. 1. Follow the signs for Town Centre (West) / A164 Driffield - onto "Admiral Walker Road"2. The road bends around to the left, over a zebra crossing, and becomes "Lairgate" - a one way street. 3. After approx 3-400 yds look for the short lane on the right, that leads straight onto Saturday Market Square. You'll see the bandstand. If you miss this lane, at the lights, filter right and down "Hengate" alongside St. Mary's Church, and follow as per alternative route instructions (line 2) above. Don't worry if you get lost first time, it's a small square block......you'll find your way eventually.... Type "Beverley" into maps.google.co.uk/ for a detailed map of the town. Cafe Nero is at the far end of the Square, near "The Push" pub.
If you plan to stay over, there are plenty of B&B's and hotels or there's a campsite that lies close to the town. There are some cracking pubs & restaurants in the town for the evening - all within a short walk. Wikipedia: " Beverley town is also very well know for its rich variety of public houses, such as The Sun Inn, the town's oldest public house dating back to the early 12th century. There are over 40 public houses in Beverley - the vast majority have been there for over a century. Beverley is also home to one of the last pubs in the world to still use authentic gas lighting; The White Horse Inn (or "Nellie's" to the local population) is owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery company and has become popular with the local student population due to its low prices." Being a small market town, you're never far from anywhere - especially a pub. I could be persuaded to join you on the Saturday night for a little light refreshment.... Hope to see you there..... Was discussing this with Steve the other day and the wife over heard. She only turns round and says you can go if you want. I reminded her when it was (exactly on her birthday) and she still said no worries go and have fun.
My dilemma is do I take her at her word and go leaving her on her birthday weekend or do I play it safe?

Ade:
It was approaching Debs Birthday, we were in town and I was asking what she wanted. She said there was nothing she really wanted. After much pestering she said that what she really wanted was a new cooker. "A COOKER!" I said, "I can't buy you that!" but she was adamant and, after a bit of a discussion, we went down to Comet and brought a new cooker. On her birthday we went out to a restuarant with some friends for a meal. Upon returning to our local afterwards we bumped into the ladies darts team who asked if she had had a nice day and what had I brought her?
"Mac brought me a cooker" Debs replied..........................
Dead man walking!!!!!!
Be very careful Ade

I think the point to note in that statement is "if you want" ie. It would be your decision to go on her birthday, not hers. It will be used in evidence against you hereafter methinks. Unless you make it up to her by buying her a new cooker of course ;D It would be great to have you/both come along, but not if it means aggro

Beverley's postcode is HU17, do a Google search for that and B&B / Bed and Breakfast will no doubt turn up something you fancy......
Local villages?
Try Cherry Burton, Bishop Burton, Walkington, Leconfield, or Tickton.
They are the closest villages that surroung Beverley itself, however....Leconfield is was a Quaker village so has written into its parish deeds that a pub shall never be built there......
Although these villages lie less than 5 mins drive from Beverley, there should be plenty of choice available in Beverley itself.
Happy Hunting! Be great to see you there.
Neil

Ok, thanks to our fantastic planning using dartboard, darts and calendar, ....not only did we manage to select the same Sunday as the British MotoGP (which will obviously mean that England will be sat under the biggest raincloud that June will see)..... but it is also race weekend on Oliver's Mount - and Scarborough will no doubt be teeming, not just with bikes, but I bet the local (generally speed camera free) area will be thick with Talivans' own Cash Machines parked by the side of the road. There again, maybe my pessimism may be wrong and all will be fine....... none of the guinea pigs will get lost, break down, zapped.......and we will get to Spurn Point with time to spare having had ample breaks along the way. ;D My only problem is deciding which of the many places we can linger at, do we spend the most time at? At the mo, I'm leaning towards lunch at Scarborough now, rather than Whitby, but am undecided. It'll be busier (obviously!) good point or bad? Mmmmm.....jury still out. We'll see how we feel on the day I guess. That's the problem, spoilt for choice - it is our first outing in that area, and it is a long old run (......wait 'til you see the map - it truely is Yorks Coast Run!), so I ask for a little patience on this one as with no time to familiarise volunteer backmarkers, support will be a bit thin on the ground. That's not to say it hasn't been recce'd.....beleive me it has (lots of miles). Maps are prepared with bullet waypoints, so come prepared needing to use it...just in case. Trev, teejayexe has kindly offered to act as back marker on this one (and if bob's not reading this, he may be in for a suprise request on Sunday.. ) - I was intending to use the buddy system on this run, but numbers are building as time gets ever closer and it may not be a wise path to take. - therefore markers will be used when appropriate. A little over a week to go now. Looking forward to seeing you all (hopefully for a beer on Saturday night if you're staying over) and ginfers crossed for decent weather.

Sorry, no can do. No. I'm a Yorkshire luddite that uses maps. You'll have to DIY this one I'm afraid..... Would like a gps system at some point, but short arms, deep pockets prevent me from doing so. They have been laminated though...... Erm, sorry Fi - I mean "encapsulated" ;D
