Are there any other Triumph Sprint ST owners on here (either past or present owners) who maybe able to shed some light on the actual fuel range?
I picked up my Sprint last Friday…. (1999 on a V plate 26500 miles on the clock) All is fine with her apart from a few teething problems…. For example…. The previous owner had over filled it with oil…. Now rectified…. !!!! Also a flat battery because the bike had more or less been stood doing nothing since it’s last MOT in July last year. Hopefully that too has been rectified now!!!! It had only done 93 miles since that MOT to the day I picked it up. Not good!!!
Anyways…. I’m curious about the fuel range on the Sprints…. I’ve read up on a lot of various forums out there on the net and so far my understanding is that the fuel range is about the 200 mile mark which includes reserve which is fine with me because it matches the range on my Divvy 900. There was one guy out there somewhere that stated he’s getting 250 miles out of a full tank (I can only assume he’s including reserve in that figure as he doesn’t state that) although most of the others are more or less saying the same thing…. 200 miles full range and that the Petrol light comes on at about 160 miles and there’s about 40 miles of steady riding left in reserve after that.
My Sprint….
Petrol light is coming on around 130 miles…. I took it to 155 miles and then filled up. I could only get 16.5 litres in the tank and it was full to the top. So being as it’s got a 21 litre tank then it means I still had 4.5 litres left.
155 miles then a 16.5 litre tank fill up equates to approx. 9.4 miles per litre.
The 4.5 litres I should of still had in her (even though the bike was saying “fill me up coz I’m empty”) should of meant I had about another 42 miles or so left (4.5 litres x 9.4 miles per litre) which would give an approx. fuel range which is as near as d**n is to swearing close to the 200 mile range being reported by other owners. Either I have a dodgy fuel sender or the tank has actually got a reduced capacity of 4.5 litres for some reason which I will need to investigate.
My guess is that it is the fuel sender…. I read that the early models were all recalled for a modification so there is a history with problems with that. The original fuel senders had a Green cap on them and were apparently recalled because there was a risk of them spewing petrol out onto the engine…. (Very healthy!!!!) Need to locate the sender itself and check if it’s the Green cap (hopefully not) or it’s got the Grey cap which is the modified replacement they fitted on the recall. Will know more once I’ve got my hands on the Haynes Manual which should be arriving in the next few days. Another reason I suspect the sender unit or maybe even a sticky float inside the tank even come to think of it is that when I actually picked the bike up the petrol light was already on and I filled the tank up there and then before setting out for home. For 10 miles afterwards the petrol light stayed on and the gauge read empty. After about 10 miles the light finally went out and the fuel gauge decided to “slowly” climb although I have noted it will only ever climb as far as the ¾ mark even though I know the tank is full.
Would be good to hear if any other owners have had similar experiences…. And what did it turn out to be etc…. can’t see why this sort of problem wouldn’t of effected other makes of bike either so if anyone else as any info. regarding a similar issue on another make/model of bike then please let me know.
Apart from the problem(s) I’ve written about above…. What a wicked bike the Sprint is…. In some ways I still prefer my Divvy though but I think that’s because that bike is like part of me now after all the miles I’ve clocked up on it…. For those who know me I still have the Divvy 900…. I have no plans at all to sell it. Going to take it off the road for a while and finally give it some of the TLC that it so richly deserves. It’s been a reliable, very faithful friend and workhorse for me over the years and I fully intend to have many more miles of pleasure from it yet.
Cheers for reading…. Looking forward to reading any comments that are posted back.
