More or less same trouble as nobby had .My 95 M reg 600 s wont start just a click from the relay . Haynes manual suggests the fault is in wiring or motor . It usually would start with a bump but wont now , had it runnin (poorly) during the week and backfired and , it ran with choke on but sounded rough and not as it usually run on cold start choke . Anyway wot do ye reckon i am best doin first?? tried dryin out wirin and wd40 about the relay

have you tested the battery, try jumping it from a small car battery, if that works then you know what to look for, also cross a screwdriver over the starter soleniod, it sparks a bit so just do it quick if you leave it on to long it will weld itself to the terminals, check the starter button, just take it to bits and give the terminals a clean, a constant clicking usually indicates faulty battery or soleniod, or bad connections/wiring even if you have charged the battery it may not be holding charge, could be starter motor, but not very often you here of these going down, but worth a check, you can take these off and spin them up with live and earth from battery

When the battery went on my 600 it happened suddenly (and 100 miles from home). It would light the headlight but couldn't turn the motor.
If the bike only runs with choke on and dies when you push it in, it could be blocked pilot jets. I had this happen to me on another bike after it had been standing for a few weeks, and I put it down to filling it with carp petrol from Asda. Ever since, if I know I'll not be running a bike for more than a couple of weeks I either empty the float chambers by turning off the tap and running the engine till it deis (not possible with a vacuum tap as used on the 600) or filled the bike with something like Shell V-Power which doiesn't leave so much crud when it evaporates.
Water in the petrol is another possibility - there was quite a long thread on here a while ago about this.

the clicking i get is 1 click on touching starter button as to start bike sounds like a jammed starter, but could also be one of the above said i.e bad connection, soleniod or a very very dead battery, give the starter a clout with a hammer to see if its jamming,as for the bad running it could be as bob said above, or you have an intermittent electrical fault causing an uneven spark

Yeah baby !!!! she purrs again . Managed to get out to work on the div thisevenin had battery on trickle charge overnight and decided to try out the above suggestions and of all the simplest things and the best tool ever out the hammer wins it lol . Tapped the starter motor with the hammer and i had a working starter again but the engine wasnt catchin but after a short time cleanin the spark plugs she eventually kicked back into life . Just to sort panels etc back on then am off a good run at long last ,

when you get time take starter off dissamble and clean out carbon to try and avoid it sticking again. Just a thought.

Good idea they generally pack up miles form home or when you are late for an important appointment. The starter brushes might be worn, but they are cheap and easy enough (though fiddly) to replace.
