DK motorcycles, only place that answered the phone, and fair play to the 2 guys in the office who were waiting for me before they locked up Its, an easy enough job too about 40 minutes, Glad i took the rear shock off when i bought the bike those nuts where really tight/siezed back then, but today no problem. will post a link to some photo's in a few minutes when there uploded. Thinking about it which i did for nearly 3 hours (whilst driving to newcastle and back), on the way back home from my sisters on monday i kept ' Thinking ' i could hear a funny noise like a crunchy grind every now and again but then when i slowed to listen nothing ! so maybe it was then that it went wrong, Glad i made it home dread to think wha could have happend ! Will do, but with a preload thati can adjust (the old one the preload adjuster was seized well and truly) i'm pretty sure it will feel better than the old one Flymo

Nice one, Andy. Looking at those pics, does anyone else think that the old shock looks like it's been dragged through a hedge backwards ;D ?

Have you had a ride yet? Does it feel a lot different?

Post by Flymo on Dec 24, 2008 22:00:50 GMT
oh yeah i've had a go, it's a lot firmer and thats without adding much preload, definatly holds the road better on bumpy corners went road the same island a few times to make sure its right bumpy...
so as i'm supposed to be going to dudley tomorrow evening i've had enough playing and go to fill her up, done all ready for tomorrow lets go home...
1 mile from home pull away rather quickly (well for a restricted D6) 2 seconds later funny ( bad ) noise, in goes the clutch, back end locks up and i start to slide (forget which way) then the rear frees up and i coast to the side of the road, look round and whats lying in the middle of the road... Yep my totally nackered chain... hoping the spockets are alright.
so unless some Saint has a spare that i can come and buy i'm pretty burgered till boxing day, when i should be able to get a chain if i can't get a spocket & chain set.
Look like bad luck does come in 3's after all (latop, shock, chain)

You could always plait some grass together and make a replacement chain get you mobile at least on a a restricted D6. Neil

Oh dear had a look this morning... did sumbody say it was Xmas and it's not good news i'm affraid so i'm no longer urgently needing a chain so i might as well order a chain and spocket set while i'm there. so that will be why the rear locked up when the chain got wedged between spocket and swingarm... Hello Ebay ;D Happy holidays Flymo

So without rubbing salt in the wound shaft drive does have some advantages??
But really sorry to hear your problems, I'm constantly amazed that you seem to fall in the brown & mucky & within days problem solved, you're a credit to the Club.

Thanks for thesupport Mike, i have already order a 2nd hand swingarm off ebay for a very reasonable price Ebay linkDon't know when it will turn up but at least it gives me time to source a complete spocket and chain set instead of going for the quick fix... When it's your primary mode of transport you kinda bend over backwards to keep it going, i can sometimes use the missus car but other factors mean that this is not always possible on the bright side since as i ain't going anywhere today i can enjoy a festive drink or 2 dozen ;D flymo

I wonder if you can totally rebuild the bike for less than the cost of the original?
So you now just need a screen & engine by my reckoning. Rebecca is going to think it's Xmas with new shock.
Drink hearty mon brave.

forgot to say, bring enuf luggage on Oxon Run to take boots home with you.
I'm going to look for one of those night school courses on bike maintenance in the New Year to try & bring back everything I've forgotten about bikes.
Can remember stripping engines in both cars & bikes in my teens, where has all that knowledge gone?

I just can't believe my luck over the last few days ! so this evening on the way to my missus parents house the clutch on the car goes virtually no drive, I've had a quick look and I'm guessing that the pressure plate has given up the ghost, it's not rattling or making any funny noises but there is hardly any resistance on the clutch release lever and it went from been fine to slipping like a good un just like that Deb said it felt like something just gave way and th pedal went straight to the floor, limped home < 1 mile hopefully Saturday the clutch place will be open. it's gotta start getting better soon ;D Flymo

Chain and spocket set arrived today Still waiting for the swing arm A quick question, the chain i now have has a soft link (i.e. needs riveting, since as i hav to replace the swingarm anyway i was thinking of poppin down the local bike shop and asking them to rivet it for me (just take the chain) then because the swingarm is off the bike i can (should) be able to fit it even though it is now endless... Any problems with this ? or is there a way of rivetting it myself even though i don't have the correct tool ? Thanks Flymo

You could take it to the bike shop, but you can do it at home without the tool. Hardets bit is pressing on the sideplate, anyway - bets to use a couple of small G clamps with small 1/4" drive sockets that fit over the pins. Once the side plate is on, you can peen the end of the pins over with a hammer - doesn't need to be much, just enough to deform the head of the pin (or you can do what Martin does and spread the end of the pin with an angle grinder)

Your plan sounds good Andy. If you have a punch & hammer you can peen the soft link yourself. Though I use a method which would have those with particularly strong mechanical sympathies weep .

Martin i thought i was the bodger round here !
Thanks for the advice Gman, I think i'll give it a go myself then got penty of 1/4" drive sockets so should be able to get the side plate on ok.
