My 93 Lreg 600 wont start only get a clicking Thought it was the battery so got out my jump pack but still wouldnt start.Hmmm I thought I havent charged the jump pack for a while so that cant be helping, didnt have time to muck about so bump started down a slight incline and it fired up.went to where I was going and then tried starting...only got a click. When I was ready to come home again I did the same a bumped it and got home. Ordered a new battery and fitted this morning. Still onyl get a clicking,I checked the fuses , all ok. Seems the round unit by the cdi is clicking- starter soleniod?? its got hitachi and MS5D-401 written on it. I tried giving the starter a knock but still wont start. So Im thinking either starter soleniod, switch gear or poss side stand switch. any thoughts/ideas???

I tried to bump it today but it wasnt having any of it. I will have another look wednesday when I have a day off. Im hoping it might be the side stand switch or somthing silly. If not then I think I will get another solenoid first and try that. I may take starter off and have a look. ~does the starter come apart to check the bushes? Are there any pics what a good set looks like?

Are there any pics what a good set looks like? Starter motor comes apart to replace brushes, a new set from memory should be about 13mm in length, they sometimes just stick in their holders due to carbon deposits building up. Worth just taking out and checking/cleaning. Haynes manual has pics I think. HTH, Trev

If the starter is clicking it won't be any of the safety switches. To double-eliminate them anyway, next time you try to start the bike do it on the centre stand, with the bike in neutral (and the n-light must be on). This way you can be sure that's not the problem.
I stripped and cleaned the coils, start switch etc on my fireblade before realising the problem was due to the sidestand. Not the switch itself but a wire into it. Irritated me no end, that one.

I have exactly the same issue, and I charged the battery for 24 hours... high speed clicking from the right hand side panel area, anyone have an idea on the cost of a solenoid? I will try the centre stand idea too. I will also check neutral switch behind sprocket cover.

hi nobby, gadget. i had the same problem as you two have got.get some electrical contact cleaner from maplins about £4 a can .clean and spray the battery connections and the starter solenoid connectors i think their a 8mm nuts that hold the thick wire on to the solenoid.pull apart the thin wire connector be carefully with this connector and clean and spray it as well.put it all back together. its corrosion of the metal that causes a dry joint at the battery and solenoid connections plus any other connections on the bike.spray the side stand switch as well.
nobby where in London are you?

..... have got another starter comming via ebay. Will try that next. Good luck with it. If that doesn't sort it, let us know. I've recently had my share of wiring issues to deal with & I wouldn't object to drinking your tea & having a look at it myself if that might help.

The lights always come on its a Yamaha feature. If the bike is in gear or the side stand is down the lights work, but no starty.

If its just the brushes its real easy to do / clean up. its just a coil motor in between two brushes. You can pickup brushes for cheap on ebay. cuddles check out rossitigers thread and t he few others bout starting hope they help. sorry as dont have time for full reply at the mo
