I need to update my Antivirus software.
Can any of you IT nerds recommend one? I have been on Norton for the past 2 years but am now looking for something that will not slow my PC down too much.

I had McAfee "free for up to 3 machines" with the O2 broadband. So good it prevented me from connecting to the internet. All the settings were set correctly but it wasn't listnening. I stayed with the Iolo System Mechanic anti virus and firewall. Everything ok so far.

I'll second the AVG vote I've been using it for ages without any problems. It was recommended to me by a mate who writes computer programs.

AVG is not entirely free now. You can download the free AVG 8 software ok. But you cannot use it until you have signed up with one of their 'partners'. You get a choice, all with strings attached. EG - You can take 2 free books, but that means you have to join their Book Club to qualify for the 'free' AVG 8. Decided to pass

Just got rid of Nortons.......what a pain to un install! Tried AVG for about 2 months, then Avast. Avast seems to least interfere with Windows. It has an audible warning for threats, and lets you know when the update is complete. Good gear for the price (FREE)

I used to use Avast, until an update scrwed up online gaming (lag and packet loss). I then switched to AVG8 and used the full version of it (via an ooh arr capn means ) until a few weeks ago when I switched to Comodo. The difference with Comodo is that, as well as an AV and realtime scanner, it includes a firewall. Depending on settings then the Defense+ scanner can be much more intrusive than the other 2 AV packages (asking your permission to allow/block things) but I quite like that as I can see exactly what's going on. /geek ;D

I downloaded Avast in the end. And immediately regretted it. It Firewalled my HTTP/S and FTP ports. I could'nt get onto the Net at all. Being a donut on things PC it took me ages to sort it. Had to uninstall my BT Router and reinstall. 'Er indoors is going to buy me EV Software for Chrissy which should sort it. Regarding the AVG freebie. I can only reiterate my problem with trying to download it. Wanted me to sign up to its partners before I could complete the download. If you had no problem with it. Wonderful. Pleased for you.

I've been very happy with System Mechanic. It keeps the registry clean, tidies up wasted memory and disc space etc etc and it does the important firewall and antivirus stuff. www.iolo.com/system-mechanic/pro/

Hmmm... that doesn't sound right, Jim. I've used Avast for years and never had any problem. I use a bt router and a hardware firewall, and have never had issues. P'raps you need to have a pc fixing party like martin did with his Gl.... You're not that far from me..

Thanks for that Dave. At the moment it's fine. Quickest it's been for ages. I uninstalled my BT Home Hub Wireless router and installed my previous router. A BT Voyager 205 ADSL.
Et voila! Sorted.
If I run into any more troubles I'll scream for help ;D

Yes I think that is about right. I am the first to admit it. I am a bit of a donut when it comes to pooter work. 10/10 for effort, but 4/10 for results. But I try hard. And I sort it in the end.
