After having freed the sticky rear brake, the fuel consumption has improved. I filled up after 216 miles, a bit concerned as the fuel warning light had come on about 10 miles before filling up. Only got 18,6 litres in. That's a lot of fuel still in the tank then. Gauge was into the red. Still, I feel happier now, 52 mpg, admitedly not giving it any stick. So then it ruins it by me not being able to get one of the pistons out of the front caliper. Bum diversionclub.proboards74.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1176012017

Not much help now, but I always pump em out before disconnecting the caliper. If one is sticking clamp the other and the offending piston will pump out. After that its compressed air but be careful.
The rear brake on my 600 started the same game and within a week or two (too busy to fix it immediately), the disc centre black paint had burnt off. Not simply blistered, it had charred to white flakes. Still can't believe the disc didnt warp.
Edit: Just seen the other posting on this tale

"I filled up after 216 miles, a bit concerned as the fuel warning light had come on about 10 miles before filling up." Best I've had before the fuel light came on was 179 miles. On the Postcombe run, Pops will verify, the light came on after only 135 miles!!!! . Mind you, bike was messing about most of the day, erratic tickover, spluttering on pick-up ( and swmbo on the back ), never did find the cause, and it hasn't been like it since. In the end I put it down to the choke sticking for some reason, would explain symptons and fuel use anyhow. trev

Did this, but the fluid was blowing past the larger piston. That's why I'll be blowing it out with hydraulic pressure at work. This will be using water.

The best I had from the 600 was 65mpg on m-ways at about 60. The worst was 30mpg going from Cardiff to East Midland in the snow. I ran out of fuel before got home & had to be rescued :-( Almost all of the run was slow so I was amazed it used so much. Guess low gears use more fuel per mile.
The 900 does 40 to 45mpg solo and 55mpg with pillion.
