I've just noticed that the old girl is losing some oil from the front of the engine. Could be the oil filter gasket but it's hard to tell because it's been blown around the front end. Is there anything known to look out for?

..... it's hard to tell because it's been blown around the front end. You need to clean it up really well & keep a look out for the first drops, in order to spot where it's coming from, because it could be a few areas .

Best advice - stop riding it til you work it out. What if it's something that's failing, which then fails, and dumps your oil on the road, right in front of your back tyre, and if explosive, right onto both? Don't fancy that myself.
It could be something as silly as a loose oil filter, btw.

Also good advice ! It's been taken off to the nice man who knows about these things while I'm at work.. Fingers crossed.

Over tightening the oil filter can splurge out the seal rubber so it might not be too serious.

All done £43.. it was a pipe which comes from somewhere and goes somewhere else.. Mmm. He did explain .. somewhere behind the airfilter? (does that make sense?) he had take off the tank to get at it.. Any good? Sorry, I thought it might be useful to others to know but so far it's not really is it!

*sigh*
There's a bit of thick hose from the airbox to the breather (by where the clutch cable goes in) it gets kinked, and causes oil to come out of the airbox breather tube, which is down by the brake pedal.
Alternatively, there's a thin bit of tube from the top of the engine to the airbox, this gets split, leading to oil leaking down the front of the engine from the top-right.
In either case, that's a lot of money. I guess it's fair as he's only charged you (half?) an hour plus pennies for the hose, but anyone on the forum would have solved that in minutes for a few beers, it's a well-known problem and we'dd all start looking around there.
Still, you needed to get it done, as if you're not sure where it's coming from, you shouldn't ride a bike that's leaking oil.

Oh, unless it's the hose from the oil cooler to the adaptor plate.

Amorti, it was the 2nd of your suggestions.. The price included picking up the bike and I need it every day and have no time, so no complaints. Maybe I'll learn how to repair it myself with time..

I.d had a scooter a few weeks and was having trouble with the oil level and so I dropped into the shop whence it came for advice. They assured me that everything was OK and I headed to work via the Mersey Tunnel. I was three quarters through the tunnel when I noticed a cloud of smoke and the smell of burning. I looked around to find out which *****d was polluting my air only to find that I was on my own in the tunnel and the smell was coming from somewhere very close to home and my nether regions. A pipe had ruptured and was dripping on to the exhaust. I kept going as the best option the exit was only 200 miles away (OK 20 yards but it seemed longer) You should have seen me move when I stopped the bike. 5 minutes later it had cooled and everything was OK. (after a toilet stop)

Collecting the bike and doing the job (even an easy job) for £43 sounds very fair to me.
