I would like to warn those who use eBay that my account was compromised two weeks ago. My identity was stolen and various bids and winning bids were taken. They used my user name and changed my address from Wiltshire to New York City! The cost of the winning bids amounted to over $10000 worth. Luckily eBay had noticed and froze my account and informed the sellers. It still took me a few days and some very stressful days to ensure my bank details etc were secure. This is the first time I have had this happen in over 5 years of trading on eBay and its a scary experience. The worse part is that I do not know how my details were divulged. I am normally very careful looking for spoof e mails but ebay reckons that they use high value articles as a veil to access your account. Things seem to have returned to normal with no more security breaches. I am very wary of any messages etc from ebay now. Theres too many unscrupulous people willing to take your money out there Shaun

Ladaman98, This happened to a friend of mine, very scarry. A couple of tips: Never use a link from an e mail always go to E Bay site first and access from there. Some of the spoof e mails, and there are many, can be spotted by the number of "//'s" in the URL. Also a warning shows up to say that the link is to a different address to the wording. I am a long way from being an expert, or even interested, in computers, but these are things I have spotted from using E Bay for a number of years. Good luck, XRWoody

Would also add that the same info for ANY financial institution that you use. If you receive a email that has a link in it... DO NOT USE IT...Always go via a link you have bookmarked or type in, that you know in genuine. If you really are unsure just contact said company and ask them. The one thing none of these co's will ask you is for personal details. So if you get a request for some so not reply......

The annoying thing is under nornal circumstances I would not have clicked a link from an e-mail. I still cant remember doing it. Things have settled now with no lost funds and a harsh reminder to myself to be more vigilant. In all probability I was in a rush or had too many e-mails to check and inadvertantley clicked on the link - whatever it was I dont want to do it again!!!!n Shaun

It amazes me just how many people respond to emails purporting to be from Ebay, PayPal, the Bank, etc, asking them to log in. These emails are getting more and more realistic and if you are REALLY not sure whether its genuine, either totally ignore it (recommended), or log in using a completely bogus username and password. Your bogus username SHOULD then be rejected but if its accepted, you'll know that they were sharks.

A normally savvy bloke from work was just sorting out some bank stuff on the phone to the bank call centre. He put the phone down and immediately a mail from 'his bank' was in his in box. He'd given the requested information and hit the button before he realized it was just cooincidence and he'd been fished.

This latest purchase I tried to make gets wierder by the day. 1st, paypal said it would take a week to 10 days for funds to clear, ( after telling me the seller had been paid) then the money taken out the paypal account gets refunded, then I get a message to say the seller has withdrawn from the deal, today I get a message in ebay to say I won and have to pay, (this after making another bid to another seller for the same goods). What kind of way is this to run a business?
