edit: after previewing I realise this is a REALLY long way to introduce myself to the forums -you might be better off not reading it, and just skipping to the bottom to laugh at me
So I'm going to start with a little confession, a bit of background and then ask for some advice.
Confession:
I crashed my Divvy (N-Reg, 600s) into the side of a taxi. It kinda hurt and, the absolute worst part is that it was completely my fault. (and if you think I'm an idiot now, you're going to hate how I got home.)
Background:
08:30pm: I was turning right from Kirkstall Lane onto Kirkstall Road (strangely in an area known as Kirkstall in Leeds). Its three lanes; I was in the right hand only lane, and it was cold and wet and sat at a red light. I glance down at my foot and notice the white right turn arrow painted on the road. I tap out a few bars of Money on the handle bars whilst I watch my boot bouncing in a shiver on the floor -its freezing cold, and I really wish the lights would get on with it.
Lights go green, and believing I'm in a filter lane, I set off.
Do my mirror checks as I'm pulling forward and start to turn right.
When I notice two pairs of headlights coming straight at me and suddenly realise what a stupid thing I've done.
I slam all on and end up hitting the oncoming taxi at about a 90 degree angle, starting somewhere on his right front wheel (I destroyed his hubcap) and ending just after the drivers door. I am at a stop now, but still standing, and he's gone through the junction and pulled up at the other side. I push the bike onto the crossing, out of the way and go speak to the driver -who as you can imagine, is not impressed.
20 minutes later and I've apologised profusely to the taxi driver (many taxi drivers, every time one went past they'd pull over and check everything was OK -and to scowl at me), given him my details and got back to my bike to inspect the damage.
The front wheel has rotated about 45degrees clockwise from where it should be, the front mudguard is completely missing (smashed to pieces, a little lump of plastic left flapping off the speedo cable) and the metal bracket that was inside it is now badly mangled and is impacting on the tire quite badly. When the front wheel was straight the left hand bar was close to being locked and it refused to start.
As you might imagine, I was in a state of shock and not quite thinking clearly. Combined with not having recovery on my "3rd party, fire and theft" insurance policy, my friends house only being a straight and two right turns away and my desperate urge not to get the bike nicked or my head kicked in I did the following.
Switched off the kill-switch so the engine would start.
Used the rear shocker adjuster in the toolkit to bend the metalwork off the tire so it could move freely.
Rode to my friends house in a very silly riding position and then drank a beer and had a meal.
Had a proper freak out and decided I needed to get home.
The panic lasted longer than I thought, and it was about 4am before I got outside with a torch, a hammer and the bikes toolkit.
By loosening the upper and lower fork braces I managed to bend the wheel to nearly straight (about 5 degrees off) before tightening it all back together again. And riding home.
Advice Please
This being my fault means my insurance wont pay, and I'm majorly low income at the moment so I can't just afford to take the bike into a garage.
I need a new mudguard -that much is obvious. I just got one off ebay (waiting for delivery), and I'm hoping when I fit it, its going to pull the front end back into shape.
-This is where I've gotten to at the moment. I assume forks, wheel, yolks and I don't know what else might be damaged though. I have no idea what might be, or how to find out if it is. Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know if I have to remove the front wheel to fit a new mudguard? -and if so, any advice on jacking the front end of the bike up?
Thanks in advance
