Now that I have bought a matching helmet (how sad ) for she who must be obeyed, I suppose we must take the first step by heading out somewhere, don't you agree?. Obviously other garments will have to be purchased (better they match too) like jacket and trousers, oh and boots maybe. We are sticking to Textile as I like cows. Until finances dictate that I can afford a Givi rack or similar and the put a box and back rest on it Julie will have to use the grab handle on the Divvy or she could cuddle me all the time. Now the last time I carried anyone was back in 1970 on the back of a Lambretta, just what should I be wary of and does and donts other than a tap on the shoulder and her saying "pull over we need some taramasalata from the shop" ? Any feedback would be appreciated ;D

Usual checks - tyre pressure, bump up the pre load, mirrors and front light may need adjusting. Your braking distance will be greater, acceleration slower, balance affected and tell her to lean with the bike on bends. Oh, and no wiggling about or getting on or off the bike without you telling her to Apart from that I find 3 kidney punches means stop, I need a wee! Good luck

I must admit, MrsM40Man rather likes the top box. She doesn't worry so much about the odd 'lively' acceleration with it on. Personally, I encourage the holding-on-to-me-tightly stratedy. Purely for the thrill it gives me . Curiously, MrsM40Man feels she know better, & normally uses the grab handles. If you want to get value for money out of all this kit you've got to buy - best not go pulling any wheelies. Else all that kit will just languish in a cupboard somewhere, never to be donned again . Practically - If you're a 'scratcher', just remember your ground clearance will be less, two-up. Maybe jack the rear suspension up a notch or two & don't go too mad on the twisties until you learn how the handling differs with the extra weight & it's distribution. Better still - why not hone those "two-up" talents by taking me out on the back first? I love being pillion ;D.

good advice above, just be as smoooth as possible on acceleration and braking.
I do find that touching the rear brake first, with pillion on, settles bike better for overall braking, and helps stop you bumping heads !! If it is to be a regular thing, and intend do some longer runs, an intercom system 'can' help for communications, others want to keep it quiet!! top box sure seems to help more pillions than not! Could also try the 'love handles' for pillion to hold on too.. this is a belt type thing you wear over your jacket, and has two handles ! for pillion to hold on to. hth

Luckily the mrs has played pillion before with her former partner so i dont think it will be new to her. If I pick routes that are straight i wont have to worry about twisties but then it won't really be a ride out will it. I have heard that I would need to crank up the suspension, I presume its that funny thing under the seat with a big curly thing on it Must see if its clockwise or anti (must read the book). Going by your handle I think you are too far sarf to do a test run, but taa for the offer

Two other instructions for the pillion I covered in my DAS.
1. Keep your feet off the exhausts, unless you want to be stuck to the bike or don't mind trying to clean burnt rubber off chrome.
2. No hand signals. You don't want your pillion winding up other motorists that upset them by giving them the bird.

I do'nt know if this is standard procedure for riding with a pillion but I always instruct my pillions to keep their feet on the pegs whenever we stop. One of the worst experiences is to get a tangle of legs when pulling away. Has always worked for me!

If you want to try "love handles" then let me know, think we've still got a set floating about somewhere (pillion and I didn't get on with them). I'll check when I go home tonight anyway.
Explain exactly how and when you want your pillion to get on and off the bike (SWMBO taps me on the shoulder when she's ready and waits for me to nod before getting on and off). That way you can brace yourself to take the weight.
Try a "sticky" seat cover (can't remember the actual name we use) if your pillion is sliding back and forward on acceleration and braking.
Pillion should sit "like a bag of spuds". Nothing worse than a pillion who tries to "help" by leaning over or who gets nervous and leans against a turn!
Ride safe,
Tommy.

Put some padding on the helmets (rear pilot , front passenger)
It 's verry annoyng that "klonk" noise every time you brake ;D

Wot everybody else has said really. The only thing I insist on with pillion is to tell them to ensure you are ready for boarding/unboarding . Nowt worse than somebody getting on or off whilst your sat there scratching yer nose. Trev

The cheapest anti slide stuff (for seats) is that rubber mesh matting that's sold in Halfords to stop things sliding about on car shelves. Its also great under magnetic tank bags to protect the paint. A patch of this taped onto the rider's helmet helps avoid scratches from the pillion's helmet.
By the way Divvies do wheelie it often happens when I shoot off from traffic lights on 600 or 900. I only get subtle little lofts but enough of a landing bump to know its happened.

Put some padding on the helmets (rear pilot , front passenger) It 's verry annoyng that "klonk" noise every time you brake ;D One reason for pillion NOT to hold onto you. I made sure Mrs and sprog use the handles at the back. Mind you sprog has it to a fine art and can hang on just by knee preasure. Mrs is OK, but they do need to understand NOT to do anything without letting you know, or you telling them to... Especially when it comes to getting on the bike, or you do what i did and fall over..... One reason to make sure your feet have good grip when alighting the bike....

One important thing to consider
If you leave with a pillion try to remember to return with one!!

Using rear brake advice is a good tip. Sitting like a sack of spuds also....
Can I add......
Gett them to look at the exit to the bend?
Remind them not to squirm around unless on the straight!
A little bit of pressure on the OUTER peg for the bend, ensures they move with the bike as you tip in.
Works for me.

Thanks folks, for one of the best laughs that I have had on a Friday lunchtime, for a long time. Pep`s trials and tribulations involving, them on the seat behind, has made for good humour.

I think what I will do is download all the messages and pin them to my back, this will give her points of reference whilst we shimmy along the high and byeways.
Thanks all
