My brother has a Sony 750 phone which has a 2 megapixel camera. Pictures amazingly good for the technical spec. The 810i phone has a 3 megapixel camera. Both have good quality lenses (for a phone). The pictures of Italy I displayed the other day were taken with a Sony DSC S70 (bought circa 2001). The only snag is its slow to work out exposure and focus so quick unposed shots are difficult. However, the lens is excellent so the picture quality is high even though "only" 3 mega pixels. I would say whatever you do - get something with a good lens. Try www.digital-cameras.com

Its all about lens quality. Megapixels are cheap but wont improve picture quality if the lens is rubbish. My Italy pix were "only" 3 maga pixels but they are sharply focussed and print happily at A4 size.
I would either go cheap (tescos aldi etc) or go expensive and get the best lens you can afford in a package you will actually use.
Even if I had the £££s I'd personally not go for a top end SLR as they are too bulky and would get left at home. I would however get a top end compact with a great lens. As it is the old Sony is still working so I'll stick with that.

Avoid it like the plage as they cannot be repaired as the company will not supply spairs as it dosn`t make any. Biggest problem with Vivitar is they fall apart internally they are the lower disposable end of the market. The shops buy them in for just under £50 for the latest model and sell them on for upto £250 so you see why the shops like them(usual profit on a digital is around 12%). Another make that you cant get repaired is Rico especially there R series of digital (they also fall apart internally), there R4 was a laugh a minute they fell apart in the shops while being demoed. If you can stick with the big ones in the order bellow you can`t go far wrong. Sony Canon :- equally as good Fuji Nikon Panasonic Casio Samsung You can read all you want in the mags and on the internet but we repair them for a living and see what really goes on with them and how they are built. You should be able to get a descent Fuji under £100. I can ask at work if we have any referbished in.

I bought my Sony DSC S70 when digicams were deffo not the cheap option or very fast in operation, but were just about affordable. I've not been disapointed. The battery is the same as used on their vid cams so lasts ages (and still going fine - touch wood). The pictures are sharp and well balanced. It has some manual modes but I've been happy with the automatic settings. Its a point & shoot but with quality like this who cares. The only downside is the 64Mb memory stick in a format that's costly. The newer styles fit (with adapter) but wont work. Modern Sonys will be smaller and faster with much bigger memory. Go for at least 1 gig as you cant simply put in a new film. This is "only" 3.3 megapixels but its a Carl Zeiss 3x zoom lens. Copy the files into something like PaintshopPro or Microsoft Photo Editor and zoom in.

See what Reaper can get, but otherwise... www.digital-cameras.com/digital_cameras/xbi-sony/You gets what you pay for so the W100 makes sense. The W100 is a traditional style body. Ive heared not so good things about the ultra thin cameras. They us a prism to bend the light from the lens along the camera body to take up less space but picture quality suffers especially low light. When I got mine, my bro had a Fuji fine pix. His had more pixels working on 3 axes instead of two, so should have been better, but actually the Sony was the best. The MZ in the alpine snow on my Italy II posting was done on the Fuji.

As Reaper said.
I have a Fujifilm E900, 8mp...top quality camera. I did by the ex a 5mp version of mine which was also fab! What I like about Fuji cameras is they're like the films they produce for SLR's etc....the final picture always has a warm tone to it, rather than Kodak that produces a blue/green tinge to the print, making it a colder style image!
Okie I'll get me coat....to technical...hehehe!!
