I had a problem on Monday with my bike as follows
Started bike as normal at 0700 to ride the 9 miles to work .. there was not much fuel in the tank but it was not on reserve. It did feel a bit under powered but I thought that was because it was only 8 degrees C outside (the coldest morning I have ridden it so far). About 5 mile into the journey on a main A road at about 50 mph the power started to die. I thought it may be the fuel running out so I switched to reserve. This made no difference and I coasted to a stop. I tried to restart the engine. It did restart after some effort but was running rough missing a cylinder now and again. If I put in gear and let the clutch out there was no power and it just died. I managed to get it started again but when I revved it to over 4000 it died straight away and the engine stopped. I was able to restart it a few more times but it just it just kept dyeing. While I was continuing my attempts to restart it, the battery went flat so I had to give up and call recovery.
The bike was recovered to my home address.
I called Warehouse Motorcycles the dealer i bought it from 2 and a half months ago and they suggested it may be the fuel had water contamination. So acting on their advice I did the following
• Drained out the tank.
• Drained out the carb float chambers (a small amount of moisture found)
• Took off the fuel filter and emptied the fuel from it checked it was ok and not blocked.
• Took off the tank and air box and checked for obstructions (none found) filter looked new.
• I put it all back together and charged the battery.
• I took all of the spark plugs out and looked at them and they all looked a nice colour, no un burnt fuel or black soot etc.
I then managed to start the bike again and I allowed it to warm up on tick over.. I then tried to rev it and sometimes it would rev ok all round the rev range, I managed to hold 5000 revs several times, but I would then let the revs drop and rev to 4000 revs and it would just die again. Sometimes as it was building revs it would sort of splutter and miss a beat on one of the cylinders.
I decided to try and take it for a short ride to see what it was like under load . Initially it pulled away ok then as I went up through the gears to about 3rd and tried to rev it passed 4000 revs it just died. By pulling the clutch and reducing the revs I managed to catch it before the engine stopped.
I then just limped it back the 100 yards home by keeping it under 3000 revs.
I called the dealer and had the bike recovered back to them .. they still have it and have had it now for 3 days .. It is still under the 3 months warrantee they gave me when I bought it so will leave it to them to fix but wondered if anyone had had the same thing or have any ideas what it could be ??
My guesses for what they are worth !
Coil not giving consistent spark ,
Throttle position sensor error
igniter unit error
Fuel pump not working properly
Dirt in Carburettor making the valve to sometimes stick over 4000 starving engine ?
