Hmm. I'm hoping its not a hex bolt with a phillips slot in it. Otherwise I'll look very silly indeed I undid it with a phillips at the last oil change.... ".... though I guess you could turn the bike upside down, like when you're oiling your chain on a push bike Whilst it's upside down, you might as well drain the oil via the filler . "Best idea on the thread ;D "Just take of the side stand and let it fall over this works for TDM "<snigger>Thats cruel!</snigger> I shall have a look in daylight and report back.......... Ady

My old XJ900F sump plug has a Phillips screw in the middle of the sump plug - I think it may be to hold the magnet into the alloy plug. If it is - dont unscrew the Phillips one or you could loose the magnet inside the sump. To avoid smashing the impact spanner through the alloy sump use a fairly light hammer - fast & sharp rap rather than a slow heavy duty smack with a heavy hammer. If you use penetrating oil and apply a bit of heat to the plug with a blow lamp, apply loosening torque to the impact screwdriver with a socket not a Phillips bit and give it a good tap it should loosen. Remember if you use heat beware of the effect on any rubber gaskets or seals in the area. Good luck.

Crike a loose magnet in the sump - that WOULD be good for the gearbox. I've had a 2 stroke seize up on me (my fault - no oil), but the fish tail had to be seen to be believed I was so busy fighting couldnt reach the clutch. On a bike as heavy as Divvie 6 or 9 with a jammed 'box it wouldnt bear thinking about and grabbing the clutch probably wouldn't help.

"loose magnet in the sump"
I wouldn't be loose - it's a magnet - it will stick to the Ferrous sump plug! [1]
[1] For christ's sake children, do not try this at home.

Agree, but on the 600 I had the actual sump plug isnt ferrous. If the magnetic insert gets pushed into the engine - you gotta hope it stick somewhere it cant do any harm

On a bike as heavy as Divvie 6 or 9 with a jammed 'box it wouldnt bear thinking about and grabbing the clutch probably wouldn't help. Loose stuff in the sump ? it's not gonna get anywhere near moving parts - if anything, it'll stick to the oil pick-up if it's a magnet..when a bolt or nut finds it's way to the sump it stays there - there's nothing there to fling it back up into the moving parts, and the oil / sludge in the sump will hold it there forever unless you're a mad wheelie hooligan. As for undoing the sump plug, I would go for the superlock socket every time. They are the finest beasties known to man - and no more expensive that 'normal' 6 or 12 point sockets.and they fit multiple sizes - a 12mm one will fit 12mm, 13mm and 1/2" hex heads. You can get em from engineering suppliers at better prices than halfords, too.

i have some stud extractors once u have drilled down the middle they tighten up in a anti clockwise direction and remove the stud the could work on a bleed nipple as it is already hollow

I can't sleep at night for wondering what happened, or if there's no daylight yet.

Dunno what happened, but that yellow divvy of his is F-A-S-T. Got a remus race system on it and some jetting mods, and it does go very, very well for a 600 divvy. Also helps that he's a leprechaun and only weighs 2 stone wringing wet.
