Got a quick question I’d like some help with. Now I realise whilst typing this that I run the risk of looking like a fool but what the hell.
When I had my air filter housing off for some reason I can’t remember, I noticed than in the carbs is a piece of clear plastic halfway down the “air inlets”. It covers most of the cross sections of it with the exception of a crescent type shape cut out of it.
Now I can’t see it shown on the micro fiche and it doesn’t seem to make any reference t it in the Haynes manual section relating to striping down the carbs, so I haven’t got a clue what it is.
Any light that could be shed on this would be greatly appreciated

A wild guess, but could it be a bhp restriction kit?

Judi - Bet you’re just trying to make us who know no better happier asking daft questions though.
Dave - On the restriction idea, that was my first thought, but i didn’t want to get too excited at the idea because that would mean more power for nothing, and that just seems too good to be true.
This is my first 600 and the 125 I was riding before had no power, so I wouldn’t know whether this felt restricted or not to be honest.
I’ve not been able to find any info on ways of restricting diversions, so I can’t say one way or the other.
Although, if no one else has this on their bikes I might just have to go for the take them out and see what happens idea.
more experiences welcome

Note, Alpaholic's pic looks like a normal setup. Though I don't remember my '98 600 having one carb with a different top cover.

From the photo's looks like the two middle carb tops were goldie colour and the two outside ones were silver. Whether that was a trick of the light, the effects of time, accident or design I don't know. www.photobox.co.uk/album/3149207

No doesn't look like that, the thing that struck me was that it just looked like a piece of plastic which was blocking the air flow. They don't move with the throttle being turned and seem like they’re fixed in position. Thanks for the input though.

Does sound very restrictor-like to me. Of a type I've never heard of though.

Methinks we need pictures.
