Classic Bike Mechanics magazine covered this recently. They say for anyone who passed the bike test before 1983 (IIRC) there is a good chance they goofed up the bike entitlements when the transferred the data to the computers. That said, I had my licence photo card thingy done about 10 years ago with no problems.

Looking at the DVLA site it seems they want to charge me £17.50 to get a photo card instead of my old paper one but I have heard this is a free service ? any one done it ,was there a charge and if so why change. Took my test in 1975 my provisional was carved in stone and when I passed got one of the new fangled scroll on papyrus licences. Neil

So there's a good chance they'll have lost your bike entitlement. A dupe would make sense. Even at £17.50 its cheaper than a re-test,

A photocard replacement is only free if you're changing address...

Aren't we supposed to get a new photocard licence every 10 years? Mines a tad older than that, but until they complain...

Spherical Objects, I didn't know that! More *bloody* stealth taxes It's not a stealth tax just because TEEJAYEXC doesn't pay attention . ............. anyway .... if you were a good road user like me you'd still just have the original paper licence you were first issued with .

I've got a green one still.
Also have a pink one that I got when I thought I had lost my green one.

Neil I renewed my old paper license last year, or maybe the year before, simply because it was falling apart, and at the same time got a medical and enclosed that to keep my HGV license alive;having read the site I thought that I had to pay the DVLA for changing to card from paper, although if I was just updating the HGV there was no charge, and enclosed a cheque, but although they cashed the cheque they sent me a refund for the same amount so it never cost me anything in the end
