Ahh, back on a bike again! Saw it on Ebay and couldn't resist... Diversion 600 K reg with 51k on the clock. Very cheap.. Good fun, quite quick compared to my VW camper.. (not that hard really) However two weeks later and while slowing down from fairly quickly a couple of clunks come from the thing and no drive.. nothing. I thought 'chain' at first but it was still there! It makes a noise from the box as you go through the gears as if they're engaging but no go.. The engine runs as well as ever still. Has anyone broken one before?? It was a little loud in top at low speeds, and was a little rattly, but I thought they were all like that..? Fortunately I got another bike for spares, (even cheaper) which is in a bit better condition, lower mileage but no plastics (been slid into a tree) which has also a decent engine/box.. Is it even worth taking the broken box apart to look? or do I just go back to the nice guy that sold the thing to me for a 'polite' word..?

I'd drain the oil to have a look at all the shiny bits that are undoubtedly living there and then go do some smiting

Am tempted to bury the thing... though I'll nick all the good bits off it first - anyone need spares??

When you swap engines, whip the bottom off the duff one and have a look. Though it could (unlikely) be the clutch. I hear Ebay is good for bike spares. ... I'll get me coat

Well- the £200 crashed one turned out to be quite a find - not even the headlamp bracket was bent beyond the reach of a bit of timber so I've swapped the plastics and tank onto it.. Problem solved... and I've an almost complete spare bike! Quite fancy stripping the old one just to see anyway though.. might be good for a lawnmower drag racer... ;D

Well done. You absulutely MUST have a look. It might not be too bad, but if it is a wreck ,we'd like to see what toasted divvie gearboxes look like.

OK - though it'll be a while before I've time to do it.... I'm quite interested myself. It sounds as though it's engaging gears, as there's a higher and higher pitched whine as they go in so it might not be much wrong. Hopefully it'll be spectacular!

Did you check at the gearbox sprocket? Never heard of a gearbox on a Divi blowing before.

Yep, sprocket's there, quite new and shiny, the previous owner had replaced it recently. I've never blown a gearbox or clutch before on anything despite covering lots of mileage- though I know a few who have - what got me was the total loss of drive! I'd expect to loose a gear maybe but not all at once! It really felt like the chain had fled! I'm quite puzzled as to what it is.. Unfortunately it's a busy time of year for me now so no time to even ride let alone take engines apart - it'll be quieter soon and I can resume my mechanical mayhem.. I will post pics. The replacement appears to have clutch death rattle, which I will try the usual fixes for.....

Started to take the thing apart with a view to ebaying bits, even though it seems the bottom has dropped out of the market.. Took the sprocket cover off... Ok, the sprocket's there.. Unfortunately the nut holding it on wasn't.... If I'd taken a proper look I'd not even have had to walk home... Damn... it'd moved just far enough the clear the splines. Still, I got a perfectly good spare motor! And the spares bike I got turned out to be a gem. Am quite embarassed about not spotting this. I assumed the worst.. Never assume, 't makes an ass of u and me..... I've been working on motorbikes and other vehicles/machines for 20 years.. It's a lesson to be shared.. Now- do I put the thing back together (stripped it down in readiness of ebaying) and sell it whole, or keep decent useful spares and flog the rest... (see 'for sale' section)

Keep the spares - you never know. Then when the bike has to go, its got the advantage of a garage full of spares and by then the market might have picked up.
