Any advice on this? I'm going to fit new seals, and as the caliper is powdery with corrosion, I thought it should be painted. Hammerite smooth OK? or not, obviously won't be painting inside the bores ;D

Think I read somewhere on here that Halfords do a caliper paint.

I painted the rear caliper on my 900 with Hammerite smooth about 8 months ago and it has generally stayed looking ok. The paint has flaked a little around the base of the bleed nipple but that's due to the inevitable dribble of brake fluid when I bled the brake after refitting. I used the same paint to do the front brake fluid reservoir and cover too and that's still looking pretty good.

I used some black paint called Tough Black (Sperex I think) that can be really hardened by baking at 200 degress. So it says on the tin! I used it on a side case rack and it worked really well though I chickened out on 200 degs heating it only to 150. I had previously used Snoothrite but it chipped horribly. The tough black is still ok.
On calipers I think etch primer is the best bet but get rid of all dusty corrosion. Doing it properly wont be a quick job and baking at that rate wont do the seals much good. But Tough Black seems to be pretty good when used like normal paint.

I used Halfords High temp (>450 deg C) satin black engine paint on my TZR 125: just cleaned the calliper sanded off any loose flaky bits then brushed on no primer required, have fun stay safe John
