hello all i have a 92 divi 600 ive got a slight ticking noise which is constant when idling and speeds up when i rev or set off, its not the normal clutch rattle that ive learned to live with i think its something else but im not sure what, it seems to be more predomenant on the right side. the only way i can describe the noise is it sounds like when you close handcuffs except its constant.....any ideas???

possibly needs shimming up (tappets), or you have a leaky exhaust somewhere

The cam chain tension may also need checking

Valve clearance is the most likely candidate - the 600 is particularly prone to that. It's surprising how much noise a tappet can make even if it's just at the top end of the recommended range. It's most likely one or more exhaust valve(s) as these have a larger clearance to start with. However, with these the noise gets less as the engine warms up and the valve stems expand. I had two exhaust valves that were like this, and I was amazed at how much quieter it was after I'd put in the next thicker shims. It's not a difficult job (much easier than most o.h.c. bikes), provided you have the proper tool to depress the valves to get the shims out.
An exhaust leak can also cause a ticking noise - this one's usually quite easy to find.

did the cam chain thing, it clicked and i re screwed it. the noise was still there so i decided to stick my head under the bike while it was running and guess what, a tiny hole in the exhaust, ive used bandage to fix and and all is quiet!!! i also decided to spray the downpipes with black high temp spray it looks really good with my black powdercoated wheels and swingarm

WARNING JIM ROBINSON
Dont arc weld anything on the bike until you have disconnected both battery leads. I also always disconnect the sparks igniter box and voltage regulator / generator for good measure.

For the sake of a few cable connectors I'd not risk it.
