If the handling of the bike is unaffected its unlikely to be the linkages. Have you checked all bolts for tightness. Is the banging when the shock is loaded as when hitting a pothole or landing after a short flight! There is preload adjustment for which a C-spanner or silmilar is reqd. If the per-load is on softest setting perhaps it is compressing the spring enough to go solid although not heard of this on a new shock. Did you fit shock? They need working thru full piston movement while off bike a few times before fitting to eliminate air.

Ohhh Dear,
Sounds like it's bottoming out...
Can it be adjusted? Depends on what shock you put on but if it got pre load adjustment then that's where you start.

I'm with Keith on this one. Look under the pipes and I expect you'll find a dent where the bolt is hitting it.
Easy way to resolve it is to bend the bracket that holds the pipe to the rear footrest hanger out a bit.
If not, have you any aftermarket bits (ie hugger). Check them too.

I sometimes get a sort of soft clunk on power take-up as I pull away from standstill. It never happens when moving only when pulling away. Its most obvious if the revs are low.
Could this be suspension or transmission?

chirodave, i to get that soft clunk when i pull away too, i have notice it when the revs are between 1,500-2,500 rpm. i find that if i feather the clutch a bit more than normal to bring the revs up quicker it disappears.

I think the yamaha pipe is in there too, but welded so you don't have to put a spanner on the nut. There is not room to get a spanner in, but you can use a flat headed screwdriver as a wedge (between nut and bracket) to stop the nut turning whilst you undo the bolts. Alternatively, can you gently pry the can away whilst all in situ on the bike?

Hi Chunk, pleased I'm not the only one with that soft clunk, but it would be nice to know if its a sign of impending work needed. Dont fancy stripping swing arm, transmission etc - only to find nothing wrong....
Or worse not bothering and something serious breaks out in the middle of Brecon Beacons.

Dave, I had the 'clunk' when I bought my bike with 8,000 miles on it. 65,000 miles later, still got the 'clunk' with no problems. Things that have been changed/altered (not looking for the clunk though) include clutch, linkage arm bearings, suspension, wheel hub (borrowed a mate's rear wheel), and I once had the final drive out for a look (as you do when you are bored on a Sunday morning!). I think it is one of those 'some of them do that sir' things. No problems related to it in 73,000 miles though.

hi, maybe the soft clunk is just a bit of play between the shaft & wheel as [ this may sound daft ] the shaft is moving before the wheel dose from a standstill. ray

Wondered where u were Judi.Won't be long 'til Christmas now. I thought of filling in an absence form but i was hopeful we could get the wireless networking thingy to work this time. Spent £100 and still couldnt get it to work...... i had great visions on sitting on the beach next to the sea with a can of pepsi max in one hand and petes laptop in the other - but it wasnt to be. Still, we got the sattelite thingy working (cant spell it but at this time of night i dont care). We got a million and one channels of pure carp. Dog weed on James's sleeping bag. Another dog who ran into our van weed on two others and the awning bag and the farmers dog did a dollop just outside our awning. Oh and no nooky for 8 days. Oh for the joys of caravanning ;D Oh and we got adopted by a Wayne and Waynetta type couple with 5 kids under 5..... that was nice Christmas? Who said christmas
