The tap on the fuel tank positions for a D6 It has completely gone from my memory where reserve position is. Is it pointing up so narrow end is up or Narrow end pointing down? I know horizontal is prime.

I know horizontal is prime. Stupid question gets a stupid answer - does it not say on the plate behind the tap? (Res = reserve and On = on IIRC )

Ade,
Narrow (pointed) part of the tap at 12 O'Clock (pointing upwards) is reserve
6 O'Clock (pointing Downwards) is On
3 O'Clock (Pointing towards rear light) is Prime
The tap body itself should be marked with Res/Prime/On too, but they aren't always easy to read.

Not a daft question at all and one i have been wondering about, seem to recall reading that pointing down is main and that is how mine is, but i tend to fill up at 170 ish miles and have yet to reach reserve to find out....

Thanks everyone for the comments and to Doof and Ghoti for answering the question.
What actually prompted it was after the postcombe run I had reach 170 miles but not gone into reserve. Normally end up in reserve aroun 150 to 160 just couldn't believe I was doing so well. Must have been everyones good riding on the day that helped.
Besides I had suffered a small hang over and killed a few million brain cells.

I took out my D900 fuel gauge. WHAT A LOAD OF CARP. An O level school pupil doing DT could design and make a better job. Its garanteed to fail. I really cant believe how rubbish it is and why they couldnt use a standard car unit. Thankfully there's the low fuel warning lamp so I wont be wasting cash on a replacement fuel level sender.
