Just looking through the Haynes manual, it says that it has a 25 litre fuel tank (including reserve) So, how is this accessed? I got the impression that the fuel tap is just on / off. On the subject of fuel, Is the fuel gauge erratic, I've read that this is the case. My bike allegedly had the sender unit replaced. The gauge was showing almost empty, (no fuel light on) & I only got £14 in. Now 160Km later (import you see) or 100 miles, it's showing just under 1/2 a tank remaining.

Fuel tank capacity include what they call a reserve?(can't physically tap into it). Reserve light usually comes on between 160-180 miles, depending on your riding style!, when gauge is well into red as a rule, then there's approx' 25 miles of fuel left. Gauge very erratic as you say, one of the bike's quirks I'm afraid. Generally goes down quite slowly till showing between half and quarter then seems to rapidly drop! If you stick to refills at approx 150 miles(don't know the km equiv), by setting your tripmeter you'll not go far wrong. regards Trev

the fuel guage is not that accurate, but the light is, you should get between 130 and 180 miles depending on how you ride it, the guage itself, shows full and only goes down once its half full, so the guage is effectivly showing only the last half of the tank, the reserve is what is left when the light is on, the tap is just an on and off tap

So, if the fuel warning light is accurate, how much is left in the tank when the light comes on?
240Km fuel light not on. 150 miles in English to you sir.
And again. When the tank was full, with the ignition off, the fuel gauge read full. When riding & showing 1/2 a tank, I turned off the ignition. ( obviously!) Next day, the gauge showed bugger all, until the ignition was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to Haynes, the fuel tank capacity on the 900 is 24 litres including reserve which is 5 litres. This is borne out by my experience - if I refill the tank just after the warning light has come on it will take 18-19 litres maximum.
This would suggest that you should be able to run for about 50 - 55 miles once the fuel light has come on. I've never risked that many - most I have ever done after fuel light illuminates is about 25 miles.
By the way, fuel guage electrics are notoriously bad on the 900. Mine has never worked so I always rely on the trip meter and low fuel warning light

'ello Eliminator, Looks like all has been said about them pesky fuel guages. On my first Div 9 it packed up after 6 months('95model). This one still working! ('01 model). Still don't trust it though. As a rule 200 mile or 340 km relatively safe though mainly my journeys work out about 60 miles a go so end up filling up around 170 miles-180 miles to be safe...takes in to account enthusiatic use of the ol' right wrist The trip switch ..as has been mentioned before..is the key. Did do 230 miles once but that was very worrying...not to be recommended. Not outta choice I should add

What is your average fuel consumption? Not per tank, but per gallon.

I have done 200 miles once with no light showing dont know if it is working is there any way of testing if fuel light is working without carrying a can of fuel and running it empty
