can someone clear this up for me once and for all. do i need a passport to travel to the irish republic or is the new picture driving licence ok opinion on this varies,to my way of thinking it is outside of the uk so u need a passport

Yep I flew into Dublin last year and passport not required but photo ID required.

thanks chaps, i have been to northern ireland twice but had no wish to cross the border but a very good friend of mine has moved there and i have a wish to go see him

RMJ That doesn't mean much - I only need to show my passport 25 per cent of the time going to France on the bike, and certainly not every time coming back. ....and *sailing* to France - I've *never* shown a passport in 25 years for sailing! Never once. Never filled in a customs form in the Channel Islands either.

Southern Ireland you don't need a passport.They have the same agreement as with the Channel Islands. Just remember they use Euro's over there. Enjoy the trip. Shaun
