I see Mr Brown has put up the 600 and over tax bracket up another £2, so much for encouraging the use of alternative transport.
So a smart car gets free tax yet still sits in trafffic for 20 minutes trying to get to town. us on bikes get there in no time at all and switch off!
Saving the enviroment B*****ks!!!!!

Carp ain't it? They're trying to push us into Public Transport which is worse than bikes....balls to em all!!
See in MCN about the cyclist gang trying to get bikers to pay congestion charging? Well I think we should put it forward that they should all be registered with number plates on them so they can be charged when the run red lights and nearly cause an accident!!

See my earlier posting about proposed new law to register ALL OFF ROAD BIKES regardless of being a yobs minimoto (which wont get registered anyway) or Rossi's racer

If they try to make it that difficult for us i'll just sell the jeep, rip the plates off the bike and not bother paying any insurance, tax etc. Lets face it they gotta catch me first. Vauxhall astra ain't that quick!
actually I won't do any of those things but it sure makes you feel like sticking two fingers up too the whole system and only worry about it when they catch up, and for the most part they're too slow to catch a cold, lol

If it ain't registered then they have no way of tracing you.....so although those people peeve me off....I can see why they do it! To damn easy to be a crook in this Country!!

£2 Oooh quick I feel the need to re mortgage!!! Jeez, I found a fiver last week in the street so I think that'll just about cover it. But seriously, I know peeps seem to feel that us bikers are always victimised, but it's a tad unfair for us to moan that gas guzzling cars should be taxed when we don't apply the same logic to gas guzzling bikes. Sure, 'most' bikes are more fuel efficient than their 4 wheeled counterparts, but with some sport bikes returning less mpg than cars is it any wonder why the greenies tarnish us with the same brush? I can feel the love coming my way after that comment....... ;D -RW-

The point I'm making is that ok some bikes are not overly efficient, however how much emmisions have you saved by not sitting in traffic with the engine running, also the saving on congestion is not insignificant.
Say two people commute into town everyday, one in a smart car. one on a generic big bike. the bike takes 10 mins to do the journey. the car takes half an hour due to sitting in traffic burning fuel for nothing. ultimatley the bike has in all likleyhood used less fuel in a month so less emmissions. I have no data to back up my claim but I think the logic stands up to scrutiny.
What thanks do we get? a £2 hike, ok its not all the money in the world but it it still £64 odd more than the smart thing. whats even worse is it still only seats two! no more than a bike.
I'd just like to say thank you Mr Brown for tax rise on my bike, the fact that whenever I go into town I take the bike in favour of my LPG guzzling 4x4. braving the dirty diesel fumes and ignorant drivers while also saving emmissions and congestion. You can give yourself a good pat on the back for encouraging people to take the green alternative.
BTW the tax on the jeep also went up by a fiver! now there's a big disincentive. NOT!!!!
It's just bizzare! say one thing do another.

True, true. A polluting vehicle which reaches its destination quickly will probably produce less pollution overall than a highly fuel efficient vehicle stuck in a jam for 40mins with its engine running (unless it's something obscure like a tank LOL).
But maybe this tax thing isn't about trying to get more car drivers onto bikes, but instead to get 'em into more fuel efficient cars? In a perfect utopia the world would be full of mass traffic jams creating zero pollution. The greenies would be happy that no lil bunnies are being gassed, the government would be happy that millions are being collected in fuel duty, and drivers would be happy in the knowledge that...... er...... wait...... no they would still be moaning about congestion ;D

I agree with Jeepster on this one! When you way it up like that when talking about traffic jams, the Motorbike is the 2nd cleanest option...only pedal bikes are cleaner but are more of a problem on the roads as they jump the lights, hold traffic up...etc etc....you can tell I ride in London...LOL!!
See they've aided pensions but put beer and wine up....that ain't fair. By the time I get to a pensionable age I'll be to old to enjoy the nights out on the booze....so, to way it up, I'll drink now and spend my money cos the Government will have me workin till I'm deed anyway!! ;D

Anyone seen the definition used for the genieric "4x4" and/or "gas guzzler" that he is hiking road tax to £300 for ?? I'm guessing that my tatty old subaru (which this week I wouldnt have got to work without...) will get hit same as the Chelsea Tractors... If someone is doing the school run in a 50k 4x4 does Mr Brown think an extra 30p/day for tax will deter them ?? Twaddle says I But £100/year means a fair bit to me... and it goes up another £100 next year Adbru

Jeepster's spot on. Bikes *never* return 0mpg.[1] Most cars in the South east return 0mpg for huge amounts of time. Also (at the moment) bikes don't contribute to congestion.
You could argue we use more NHS resources though - but then you could argue on average we use less pensions because we have a habit of ceasing to exist 30 times more than car drivers!
[1] Actually there was a time in Gridlock on Tower bridge where I had to wait but that's once in 9 years.

It only applies to vehicles built after 2001 and are in band G, over 225g/km of Co2
hope that puts you mind at rest adbru, once again it's not going to effect very many people at all.

Won't impact the Green Wellie Brigade in London, but it will impact the small holder in rural Wales or Yorkshire - who actually needs a 4x4. Once again laws passed that might make sense in London, but London is not the UK, and once again laws passed that are not thought through properly. Fox Hunting anyone? RMJ

Well I suppose at least he has reduced the basic rate tax by 2% from 22 to 20. Oh b.....ks, I forgot, he put up NI so that he gets all his money back and it just looks like we are getting a tax break.

Funny, my Brother was off hunting when I popped in to see him a couple of weeks back. Leaving aside the irony that he never had the slightest bit of interest in hunting 'till they tried to ban it I had to chuckle when I asked if it made any difference now they can't kill the fox. I was expecting the answer "No, I was never anywhere near the kill anyway." What he actually said was, "Yes, we have to take a Falcon with us now." [1] Sensible laws for a happy Britain. :-( [1] I assume he was serious.

well. yes reduced income tax down to 20p .. but abolished the 10p tax band ! increased NI.. motor tax up on them high siders (4X4) and high performance sports types< (whatever they are!) but agree that the poor old workers (agricultural types etc) that actually need them are also going to get hit, BUT increasing tax on the ol bikes is a bit nasty aswell,
well I had a word with him see, and I told him, look, our club has a lot of exciting runs coming up over the next few months, we will be enjoying the countryside, not contributing to any congestion, we will be putting a few quid back into varies local communities, and will be making a sizable donation, once again, to a worthwhile charity, so leave fuel alone.... AND He listened, as fuel increase not until October,,, so only run affected looks like the Frosty Rollocks,, will we cancel it due to high fuel charges .. Naw !!..
we will all have to become, non smoking (not a bad thing !), tea total persons to benefit, or offset these new increases...

...only pedal bikes are cleaner but are more of a problem on the roads as they jump the lights, hold traffic up...etc etc.... And I thought the biggest problem on the roads was indecisive woman drivers Agree. Indecisive dirvers are responsible for loads of traffic. Push bikes would be ok if they were insured.

Bike fuel consumption is exactly why I keep carping on about diesels. Some people have an almost religious belief that diesels and bikes can't ever mix. But I dont see why there should be any sort of technological problem or any loss in performance and enjoyment. Bikes dont have car derived petrol engines so why should they be expected to struggle with car (or heaven forbid) generator derived diesels. The bike manufacturers should get their acts together before the anti bike lobby win even more ground and bike use gets legislated into history.
