I don't believe this ............
Just gone to renew the tax on our car online, and the application was denied, saying there was no record of the car being insured.
In a panic I dug out the insurance policy docs and was relieved to see we are covered until August. Only on closer inspection did I realise the the car registration number on the certificate has two numbers the wrong way round.
Turns out this has been the case since we took out the policy in 2005 !
Question for the insurance experts is: -
Does this mean we have not been covered all this time ??
Suprised we haven't triggered off one of the police cameras that recognise uninsured cars, as the insurance definately isn't registered with DVLA.
Check those details thoroughly peeps !
Dave

Crikey !!! Well at least you noticed it now. Amazing how in this 'flawless' digital world we live in that errors like this still happen. You just reminded me about the naff V5 I first received back from the DVLA when I bought my Divvy. The make and model of the vehicle were blank and the engine size had dropped to 550cc LOL. I tell ya, you can't get the staff these days. -RW-

Dave,
It's human error on the Insurance Company's part. But to carp you right up...if your car was flashed by a Met Traffic Officers car, it would have been impounded at Charlton...or Perivale when it finally opens. You'd have had to appear with Insurance, both parts of your licence and your V5. Hopefully all the addressess on the docs will match, if not you'll need to prove ownership by providing a Utility bill that matches the V5.
Then, to really get your back up, you'd have to pay £105 Restoration fee, and £12 per day Storage if you didn't pick it up before noon the day after it was impounded.
If that ain't enough, you then get a fine and points on your licence for being a criminal in the eyes of the Law!!
And in a worse case scenerio....your car has been in 2 times before...third time it is either Auctioned or Scrapped!
Harsh but necassary with the majority of criminal types out there.....yours is obviously an error on your Insurance...but you're still naughty for not checking the details in the first place.
Hope that ain't given you nightmares hinny!! LOL!! ;D

If you haven't been insured since 2005 due to a mistake by the insurance company, does that mean you can claim back 2 years of insurance premiums and a discount on this years insurance as compensation. Wishfull thinking I suppose.

Wishfull thinking I suppose. Worth a try....but they'll just say Dave was at fault for not confirming the details...and funnily enough there is a bit in the small print that says you're liable for mistakes as you are requested by them the check the details and confirm they are correct.

Dave The same thing happened to me when I was a student. I went into the Post office for Tax and the guy spotted that instead of 818 the reg number read 181. He dismissed it as a clerical error and gave me tax, I b*llocked my insurance firm and got it changed. My assumption has always been I wasn't insured for that period. I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer on this one. Kent Police and the RAC have a legal advice line but it's hard to imagine them telling you are *are* insured if the VRM on your insurance doc isn't correct.

Trust me he wasn't insured. If he's asked me to do a check at work on his VRM it would have said he wasn't insured! Sin City for likkle Davey-Wavey!! LOL!!

Jools,
I remember you discussing this with me... and how a prison sentence is likely.
Oh well, your YDC friends won't forget you while you're inside Fi.
Just remember, if you drop the soap, don't pick it up!

Wishfull thinking I suppose. Nah, I tried that. They were having none of if. And what you going to do? Take them to court on the basis that you've been driving uninsured & formally admit to the offence?

LOL to all replies
Spoke to the insurance company first thing and they assure me we ARE insured (I am sure this would change if we had a claim) and that new documents would be sent out - free of charge (thanks!)
No harm done, apart from Julie gaining negative Kudos for turning up at the school she teaches at today in our battered old Astra !!

Grrr !!
Insurance now updated and I can apply on line
But the cost of the tax has gone up a fiver in the budget !!
Funny how tax hikes are immediate but income tax decreases have to wait until April !!

I had similar problems trying to tax both my car and bike online, wouldn't let me because the insurance had only just been renewed and they hadn't got the updated details on file. So I'm going to tax both for six months, now and then for the full year next time so i shouldn't have the same problem again. (Hopefully)

So you have to pay extra so a Govt agency can reduce its costs. No change there then and yet more local post offices get closed.

It's either that or queue for ages, on Saturday morning, in the local Post Office to tax them. I've done it now so it's back to annual renewals next time
