The Govt looks very likely to enact a bill that would make it a llegal requirement for EVERY off-road bike to be registered. There is no distinction for track day bikes, minimotos or even GP bikes. Its supposed to stop yobs on minimotos from creating havoc on council estates... Like they will be displaying plates oh yes. www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=2007-03-02b.1185.1&m=1520I'm not against the reasons for creating the bill, but it simply wont work and every law abiding owner will be penalised. Email your MP and point out the obvious gap in this legislation. Sensible laws yes, but this is not one of them.

If it's just a case of registration what's wrong with that? At least the owner can be verified and traced. I have to tax my offroad bike to use it on the roads so I'm not affected. If I didn't tax it, but registered it, at least if it was stolen and recovered the police would know it's mine.

The thing is, it will have no effect on the problem - if hooligans are riding mini-motos illegally on the road already, why should they take any notice of a law requiring them to register them ?. There is also a concern for classic bike restorers who often have several donor bikes in the garage - they would all have to be registered for road use too, as would all racing bikes - if this bill goes through, you can say goodby to MotoGP and WSB.Why should they register bikes for road use just for one or two rounds of a championship ?.It really is an ill-though out and indiscriminate piece of knee-jerk legislation and we need to lobby our MPs for the amendments necessary to make sure only the criminals are targeted. So there.

Maybe it doesn't affect you but it does affect lots of other people and is another example of restrictive law causing problems for the majority while doing nothing to catch a difficult minority.
How many folk have old bikes that will never be registered nd never uesd on the roads. Registering will simply cause more inconvenience with SORN notices every year and all because the government want to be seen to be doing something. The yobs they want to catch wont show number plates so the law wont affect them. It will affect every other law abiding person wth trials bikes, motocross bikes, GP bikes, track day bikes, quad bikes used on farms, etc. There is a real risk this could ruin bike motorsport - can you imagine Rossi et al with number plates. The law also does nothing about other types of off road vehicles diggers, dumpers, etc. I'm sure a half baked law could be found for registering them, but they aren't bikes so aren't a problem.
And when the numbers are ground off the plod wont be able to work out its reg number which is why Data Tag and Smart Water exist. This law might be well meaning but it won't work as intended and there are already more than enough laws to solve the minimoto problem - if the plod bothered to use them.

Notice that a Smart car stuck in traffic pumping out fumes pays zero road tax. A bike over 600cc pays who-knows- what (Ive not yet renewed the tax on my D9).

doing nothing to catch a difficult minority. I disagree. It creates a new crime to do scrotes for. At the moment a rozzer finds a scrote standing by his (probably stolen) rat bike what can he do? Possesion of a rat bike is not a crime. After this law is passed Pold can do the Rat bike owner for not registering his bike. In crappy areas like Crawley Scrotes on untraceable nicked rat bikes really *is* a problem. So IMHO the law itself is good. I must confess though, you only have to look at speed enforcement to realize what is actually going to happen. Plod will just go to Sammy Miller's Museum and the National Motorcycle museum and the garages of pleasent old duffers with classics and hit them as hard as they can while leaving their scrote freinds to carry on.

My point exactly.
And a scrote with rat bike who cant prove he owns it should have it removed on suspicion of theft. If the DVLA were any good engine and frame numbers could be cross referenced. Its not a difficult thing for a computer to do - if programmed in. But, oh dear they forgot to ask for that one so they can't do it..
But, dont worry, parliament will simply come up with yet another law to p**s off the decent and law abiding.
